JOHNSTOWN — SOFTBALL

Local trio lifts St. Vincent

The St. Vincent College softball team completed its 2010 season with an 18-15 overall record, with a trio of Johnstown natives playing a large part in the team’s success.

Emily Petrowsky, a sophomore shortstop and graduate of Bishop McCort entered the school’s record books in the Bearcats’ April 27 victory over Washington & Jefferson College, blasting a three-run, game-winning homer to give St. Vincent a 6-3 victory. It was her sixth home run of the season, breaking a five-year old team record. She hit two more home runs to wrap up the year with eight tying her for the top spot in the Presidents’ Athletic Conference.

Shauna Hetrick, a freshman pitcher and Westmont Hilltop graduate, put together one of the finest seasons for a pitcher in school history. The left-hander started 24 games, going 11-8 with a 3.58 ERA. She tallied 17 complete games, and led the PAC with four saves, while finishing third in the conference with a St. Vincent record 125 strikeouts.

Leanna Seminsky, a junior outfielder from Bishop McCort, batted leadoff for St. Vincent. She started 29 games, batting .280 (26-for-93), with seven doubles, seven RBIs, and 17 runs scored. She led the team with 12 walks and an on-base percentage of .362.

 The 18 wins are the second most in program history, behind only the 2008 team’s 22-16 record.

McMellen earns NEC honor

LORETTO – St.  Francis shortstop Katie McMellen was a sparkplug at the top of lineup during a successful road trip through New York City last weekend, and she was rewarded by picking up her first Akadema/Northeast Conference Player-of-the-Week award.

McMellen hit safely in all four games on the weekend, and helped the Red Flash win three of four games against Wagner and first-place Long Island. She hit .583 and scored five runs in SFU’s three wins.

During her five-game hitting streak, McMellen raised her batting average from .236 to .285 with

10 hits in 17 at-bats.



WRESTLING

Harris finishes 2nd in MAWA

SALISBURY, Md. – Malcolm Harris, a sophomore at Greater Johnstown, placed second in the Middle Atlantic Wrestling Association’s Eastern National Championships over the weekend.

Wrestling in the 125-pound Advanced Division, Harris went 2-1 at the event, which required qualification at district and regional tournaments. He beat beat Alfred Bannister of LaPlata, Md., 11-10 in rideout then edged Raymond Nicasia of Shoreham, N.Y., 4-2 before falling 9-5 to Leroy Harman Jr. of Williamsport in the finals.



BASKETBALL

Blue Thunder win title

HAGERSTOWN, Md. – The Pa. Blue Thunder U-13 girls team won the Mountain Magic Classic by upsetting two U-15 teams to go 4-0 on the weekend.

The Blue Thunder put together an 18-0 run to stun the U-15 10th grade GVAA team from Maryland to win 48-21. The Thunder used all girls in eighth grade or under. They won their first three games 42-30, 59-41 and 59-13.

They are 13-3 this year with two tournament championships.

The leaders in points were Emily Chobany (58) and Olivia McCabe (34), both of Portage. North Star’s Courtney Schrock followed with 26. The team turned in a series high of 140 rebounds with McCabe’s 42 leading the way.

Schrock had 10 steals followed by Catherine Costlow of Richland with nine as the team turned in a series high of 52 steals.

Other members of the team include Katelyn Oleskey (Conemaugh Township), Emily McCray (Conemaugh Valley), Lacey Krouse (Ferndale), Amanda Meier (Forest Hills) and Taylor Hoover (Westmont).

BASEBALL

Westmont Hilltop 12, Meyersdale 5

Ben Legath and A.J. Rievel hit back-to-back home runs in Westmont Hilltop’s six-run sixth inning in a victory over visiting Meyersdale on Monday.

Legath hit a two-run homer ahead of Rievel’s solo shot. Tyler Kleinmeyer went 3-for-5 for the Hilltoppers (5-7).

Justin Donaldson doubled and drove in two runs for the Red Raiders (10-6).

Bishop McCort 4, Portage 2

Bishop McCort’s Braxton Ferre struck out seven and walked three in a one-hitter against visiting Portage.

Ferre and teammate Travis Antolik were both 2-for-3 with each scoring a run. Antolik drove in one. Joe Hrbal added a triple, an RBI and a run scored for the Crimson Crushers, who also got an RBI from Luke James and a run scored from Matt McMillen.

Scott Nolan had the Mustangs’ lone hit and an RBI.

Richmond 9, Altoona 5

RICHMOND, Va. – Tim Alderson gave up five runs – four earned – in five innings as the Flying Squirrels snapped the Curve’s five-game winning streak.

SOFTBALL

Westmont 16, Bishop McCort 1

Gina Rievel had a single and two doubles for Westmont, which also got a single and a double from Megan Walker, as the Hilltoppers belted Bishop McCort on Friday.
