High School Baseball

Berlin 8, Ferndale 6


BERLIN – Tyrel Stockwell struck out

11 and walked two as Berlin surprised Ferndale in a WestPAC matchup on Wednesday.

Dakota Glessner was 2-for-3 with a walk, a run scored and drove in two runs for the Mountaineers, who also got a two-run double from Ryan Lynch in the fifth.

Kirk Davis was 2-for-2 with a walk, an intentional walk, a steal and two runs scored.

For the Yellow Jackets, Mike Dorchak had a two-run double in the seventh inning.

Conemaugh Township 6

Conemaugh Valley 4


DAVIDSVILLE – Kyle Zambanini went 2-for-4 and drove in two runs as Conemaugh Township edged visiting Conemaugh Valley.

Alex Roberts and Cody Kushner each had two hits for Conemaugh Valley.

Blairsville 7, United 4

BLAIRSVILLE – Winning pitcher Terry Ratkus and teammate Josh Goldberg each had two hits as Blairsville outlasted visiting United.

Chase Wallace had three hits for the Lions (5-5).

Homer-Center 11

Laurel Valley 2


HOMER CITY – Zach Davis had a three-run triple as Homer-Center beat visiting Laurel Valley.

Eric Cusimano smacked a grand slam in the sixth inning to complete a 4-for-4 game.

Laurel Valley’s Ben Emminger went

2-for-3.

Shade 17, Blacklick Valley 10

CAIRNBROOK – Shade had 15 hits and scored 10 runs over the first two innings in a win over Blacklick Valley.

The teams combined for 27 runs.

Brett Edwards had three hits, including a double, Brock Medva singled and doubled while scoring three times for Shade. Cody Kiser had two hits with a double.

Mike Shaw had two hits and three runs scored. Ryan Medva tripled and drove in three runs.

Blacklick’s Victor Manda and Caleb Palko each had two hits. Dalton Cesarz singled and scored three runs.

High School Softball

Claysburg 9

Chestnut Ridge 6


CLAYSBURG – Kala Brumbaugh doubled and tripled, and Christi Mauk tripled as 11-1 Claysburg-Kimmel defeated visiting Chestnut Ridge.

Brittany Mock tripled and doubled for 10-2 Ridge. Jessalyn Neatrour and Makayla Dunlap each homered, and Stefanie McCoy and Amber Crawford had doubles for the Lions.

Blacklick Valley 8, Shade 2

CAIRNBROOK – Alison Verba had three hits and Lauren Wiegman had

10 strikeouts and two walks as Blacklick Valley beat host Shade.

Shade’s Shayna Kalanish had two hits, and Casey Roberts doubled.

Berlin 16, Ferndale 2

BERLIN – Berlin improved to 7-3 with a five-inning victory over Ferndale on Wednesday.

The Yellow Jackets jumped out to a 2-0 lead on consecutive extra base hits by Melanie Bremer and Brittany Eisenhuth.

But pitcher Megan DeMartino settled in after that, allowing no further runs and finishing with 11 strikeouts.

Berlin scored eight runs in the bottom of the first, highlighted by a two-run homer from Sami Johnson over the left-field fence to take the lead for good.

Johnson doubled in her next at bat and also singled later in the game. The Mountaineers’ Elizabeth Hay was 4-for-4 with five RBIs and teammate Kristen Hankinson drove in three.

Conemaugh Valley 13,

Conemaugh Township 4


DAVIDSVILLE – Sammi Britton and Darla Pollino each went 4-for-5, and pitcher Holly Glass had 11 strikeouts as Conemaugh Valley beat host Conemaugh Township.

Julie Byer went 2-for-4 with two runs scored for Township. Rose Kolesar went

2-for-4 with a run.

Somerset 24,

Bishop McCort 0 (5)


Jaime Emert allowed three hits, striking out five and walking one as Somerset crushed host Bishop McCort in five innings at Roxbury Park.

Emert was 4-for-5 with a double and Amy Svonavec was 3-for-5 with a double for the Eagles (8-4), who also got a 3-for-6 outing from Ashley Humbert and two singles each from Hillary Olsavsky and Kendra Custer.

Sara Mangiafico and Emily Daley had two singles apiece for the Crushers.

Johnstown 9, Somerset 7

SOMERSET – Freshman Amber Maurer was 3-for-5 with a double, three runs scored and two RBIs as Johnstown held off host Somerset for the win on Tuesday.

Seniors Brittany Zucco, Kassie Sabo and Lindsay Rogers all had two hits for the Trojans with Zucco scoring a run and driving in another, Sabo scoring a run and driving in two and Rogers scoring two and driving in three.

Freshmen Kiersten Szczur earned her first varsity win with Sabo getting the save.

For the Eagles, Jaime Emert was 2-for-5, Nichole Landis was 2-for-4 and scored two and Brooke Spangler scored a pair of runs.
