SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. —
The Soo Eagles edged the Johnstown Tomahawks 5-4 in an overtime shootout in front of 670 fans at Pullar Stadium on Friday night.
Soo moved two points ahead of fifth-place Johnstown in the NAHL North Division standings.
The teams play again at 7:30 tonight.
Johnstown’s Brandon Reinholz scored the first of the Tomahawks’ three power-play goals at 11:03 of the first.
That tally was sandwiched between Soo goals by Robin Hoglund at 6:34 and Michael Covach at 11:17 of the opening period.
Soo made it 3-1 on Jared Vanwormer’s goal 1:42 into the second.
But coach Jason Spence’s Tomahawks battled back with goals by Brandon Brossoit on the power play at 6:48 and Codey Hansen at 12:13 to knot it at 3-all.
The Eagles’ Hoglund made it 4-3 at 13:34 of the second.
Johnstown’s Ian Spencer forced overtime with his third-period goal on the power play at 10:41.
Neither team scored in overtime.
The first five shooters for each team in the shootout did not score.
Soo’s Hoglund completed a banner night by netting the only goal of the shootout in the sixth round.
Soo goaltender Tyler Marble faced 61 shots and made 57 saves.
Johnstown used a goalie tandem of Bodhi Engum (18 shots, 15 saves) and Chris Truehl (18 shots, 17 saves).
