UPJ off to 1-3 start in Florida

Pitt-Johnstown went 1-3 on the weekend during its annual spring trip to Fort Pierce, Fla.

On Saturday, UPJ suffered an

8-0 loss to East Stroudsburg and a 5-3 setback in 12 innings to Wilmington.

On Sunday, Drew Shaulis and Seth Roy each drove in two runs to highlight a five-run ninth inning in UPJ’s 5-0 victory over Northwood (Fla.) University.

Northwood earned the split with a 10-0 win in Game 2.

UPJ will play a doubleheader against Chestnut Hill College today before playing a doubleheader against Mercy (N.Y.) College on Wednesday.



Keystone sweeps Mount

VERO BEACH, Fla. – Mount Aloysius dropped pair of games to

No. 9 Keystone College on Sunday.

Kyle Rose of Ligonier went

2-for-3 in the Mounties’ 9-2 loss in Game 1 while Central Cambria’s Matt Cornetti was 2-for-3 with an RBI.

Rockwood graduate Eli Traup had two hits and scored a run.

Rose went 3-for-4 and scored a run in Game 2, an 11-3 Keystone victory.

Cornetti had two more hits and scored a run.



BASKETBALL

Vulcans fall in PSAC title game

ERIE – Despite a season- and career-high 31 points by senior guard Crystal Andrews, a Greater Johnstown graduate, the California (Pa.) women suffered a 77-68 loss to No. 1 Gannon in the championship game of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) tournament on Saturday night.

With the loss, the Vulcans fall to 23-6 this season after having made their 10th conseuctive appearance in the PSAC finals (4-6).

Meanwhile, the Golden Knights remain the only undefeated team in the nation with a 33-0 record en route to claiming the PSAC title in only their second year in the conference.



Sedlock leads team to title

Northern Cambria graduate Brittany Sedlock was named the tournament MVP in leading St. Vincent to a 60-58 victory over Juniata in the ECAC South Division championship game on Sunday.

Sedlock, a sophomore forward, scored 12 points and grabbed

12 rebounds in the championship.



Pitt’s Gibbs makes 2nd team

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Pitt sophomore guard Ashton Gibbs was named to the All-Big East Second Team on Sunday following a

vote of the league’s 16 head coaches.

With Gibbs’ selection, Pitt has now had at least one first- or second-team honoree in each of the past 10 seasons.

Gibbs is a candidate for the Big East Most Improved Player Award as his 11.9 points per game increase over his freshman season (16.2 ppg in 2009-10 from 4.3 ppg in 2008-09) ranks among national leaders.



FENCING

Ganzy named All-American

Ethan Gregory Ganzy, son of Dr. and Mrs. Alexander Ganzy of Westmont, has been named a First-Team U.S. Fencing Academic All-American.

Team members had to have a cumulative grade-point average of 3.85 or higher.

The award was presented at the Junior Olympic Championships in Memphis, Tenn., by USFA President Kalle Weeks.

Ganzy is a member of the Ligonier Fencing Club and the U.S. Fencing Association.

He has competed at the U.S. Nationals in San Jose, Calif., and Dallas; the North American Cup in Kansas City, Mo.; and the Junior Olympics in Memphis, Tenn.

Ganzy is a Boy Scout of Troop 11 who currently is working on his Eagle Project.

He is also a member of Venturing Crew 11 and a Cadet in Civil Air Patrol Squadron 1501.

He also has earned a second-degree black belt in jujitsu and

is nationally ranked in martial arts.



WRESTLING

Sanderson wins Big Ten title

ANN ARBOR, Mich. – Senior Cyler Sanderson won a Big Ten title at 157 pounds on Sunday to help Penn State wrestling to fifth place, its best finish since 2007.

Brad Pataky (125 pounds), Dan Vallimont (165), David Erwin (184) and Cameron Wade (285) also earned trips to the NCAA tournament, which will be held March

18-20 in Omaha, Neb.



FOOTBALL

Lucas named to team

Westmont Hilltop junior Garrett Lucas has been named to the Pittsburgh Nike All-Combine team.

The 6-foot-3, 280-pound offensive guard and defensive tackle was one of 25 players honored at the combine, which attracted more than 500 athletes from across the Northeast.

Lucas was one of five offensive linemen named to the team, which took into account a player’s performance at the combine and his potential as a college recruit.
