officer to be honored

EDGEFIELD, S.C. – Somerset County Wildlife Conservation Officer Travis Anderson is to be honored by the National Wild Turkey Federation for his work.

The Jerome resident will be recognized as the NWTF’s Pennsylvania wildlife law enforcement officer of the year during the federation’s

34th annual national convention Thursday-Feb. 21 in Nashville, Tenn.

“Travis’ record of successful prosecutions at the district and county levels are a direct reflection of the excellent job he does and the countless hours he spends on investigations, case preparations and presentations,” said Matt Hough, director of the Pennsylvania Game Commission’s Southwest Region. “He is well-respected and goes above and beyond the call of duty.”

Anderson and other state award winners will be eligible for the NWTF’s national law enforcement officer of the year award, which will be presented on Saturday during the convention.

The NWTF started its officer of the year award in 2000.

Evanisko retained

by NRA group

George Evanisko of Oakhurst has been retained for his 15th consecutive term as chairman of the Conemaugh Valley Friends of the NRA.

Jack Slifko is vice chairman, Harold Schneck treasurer, Mike Zahoran secretary and Bob Serotkin prize and donation chairman.

The associates are Nick Constantino, Greg Gallardy, John Heckman, Margaret O’Malley, James Drapchak and Michael McVicker.

The local chapter ranks 100th nationally out of

1,100 chapters and 10th among 50 Pennsylvania chapters.

The group’s annual fundraising banquet will be held Aug. 13 at Christ the Saviour church hall in Johnstown’s West End. Volunteers are being sought to help with the banquet.

Daisytown club

reschedules event

The Daisytown Sportsmen’s Club’s annual polar bear shoot has been rescheduled for 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday at the club grounds along Fulmer Road.

A $10 per-person admission includes a dated pin, hot food and drinks. Admission for couples is $15, and for nonshooters it is $7.

The event offers offhand shooting at $1 per shot for

32 caliber and larger firearms with a 6-power limit on scopes.

Shooters may bring their own firearms, or use those available at the club.

What the Reapers encountered was an emotional and purple-clad Jess’ Army.

Rams roll past Blue Jays
It had been a while since the Richland Rams had played a varsity hockey game. Though the Rams’ last action came on Jan. 12, Richland showed little rust as it trounced Conemaugh Valley 12-1 Friday evening at Cambria County War Memorial.
Richland (7-3-2) posted four goals in the game’s first 4:33 as it buried the Blue Jays (1-14) early.

Mountain Cats look to get Pecora closer to No. 500
In some ways, it’s the perfect time for Pitt-Johnstown wrestling coach Pat Pecora to be reflective.
After all, his eighth-ranked Mountain Cats will be holding their final home match this evening when Anderson visits at 7 p.m. Pecora will be saying goodbye to six seniors, which is always an emotional time for him.
But he’s not ready to look back on his legendary career, even as he closes in on his 500th career win.

Judge sets May trial date in Sandusky abuse case
A judge said Friday he would decide soon whether to grant former Penn State assistant coach Jerry Sandusky greater freedom – and visits from his young grandchildren – while he awaits trial on child sex-abuse charges, but prosecutors countered that Sandusky’s home is not a safe place for children.
Judge John Cleland set a tentative trial date of May 14 for Sandusky and promised to rule quickly on a number of other issues, including dueling requests for changes to his bail restrictions.

Jordan Staal expected to return to Pens’ lineup today
Jordan Staal’s left knee is fine. His face, however, could use some work.
The Pittsburgh Penguins center plans to play today against Winnipeg in his first game since injuring the knee in a loss to the New York Rangers on Jan. 6.
The road back has gone smoothly enough until Staal started practicing with his teammates this week.

UPDATED Bedford advances in PIAA wrestling in odd way
It’s not often that a team can win a match at the PIAA Class AA Dual-Meet Championships while giving up two forfeits, but that’s exactly what Bedford did this afternoon at the Giant Center.

In fact, the Bisons won 30-29 over Pen Argyl because they forfeited.
