COLLEGE

UPJ to retire jersey No. 44

The Pitt-Johnstown Athletics Department will honor the life of former Lady Cat standout Jody Billingsley during UPJ’s “Think Pink” Breast Cancer Awareness doubleheader basketball game Saturday.

The Lady Cats will tip off against Wheeling-Jesuit (W.Va.) at 5:30 p.m. and the men’s game game will follow at 7:30.

Billingsley was a victim of the L.A. Fitness Center shooting that occurred outside of Pittsburgh on Aug. 4.

A moment of silence will be held prior to the game. At halftime of the women’s game, UPJ will retire Billingsley’s Lady Cat jersey No. 44.

Billingsley earned a degree in biology in 1994. She was a member of the Lady Cat basketball team from 1990-1994.

Steelers sign ex-Pitt punter

PITTSBURGH – Former Pitt punter Adam Graessle and wide receiver Brandon London have been signed to the Pittsburgh Steelers’ offseason roster.

Graessle, who punted at Pitt from 2003-06, was released by the Green Bay Packers before the start of training camp last season and later signed with California of the United Football League.

London, who played at Massachusetts, appeared in 14 games with Miami in 2008 but was released by the Dolphins before the start of last season.



WRESTLING

Strittmatter

to join Hall

Former UPJ two-time national champion and current assistant coach Jody Strittmatter has been selected for induction into the Pennsylvania Wrestling Coaches Association (PWCA) Hall of Fame.

Twelve former wrestlers, coaches and/or contributors will be inducted on April 25 at the Ramada Inn in State College.

Strittmatter was a two-time PIAA place winner at Cambria Heights High School.

After placing third at 103 pounds in 1995, Strittmatter moved up to 112 pounds and won the PIAA state championship the following year.

Strittmatter joined coach Pat Pecora’s UPJ team and won back-to-back NCAA Division II national championships as a freshman and sophomore.

After transferring to Division I powerhouse Iowa prior to the 1999-2000 season, Strittmatter wrapped up his collegiate wrestling career with a third-place national finish in 2001 and a national runner-up finish as a senior in 2001.

PATTON – Cambria Heights put five players in double figures, including Miranda Zeanchock’s game-high 16 points.

Maria Pompa and Danielle Bodek had 12 points each for the Highlanders, while Kristy Gwizdak scored 11 and Kayla Cavallo scored 10.

Lindsy Sammarco’s 12 points paced the Huskies, who got 10 from Kristy Krug.
