NANTY GLO — HIGH SCHOOL SOFTBALL

Blacklick 17-10, Harmony 1-0

NANTY GLO – Blacklick Valley swept a pair from Harmony on Monday behind senior Lauren Wiegman, who chalked up her second career no-hitter in the second game.

Wiegman was 3-for-3 with a triple in the first game, during which Hailee Scott went 2-for-4 and Megan Thomas was 3-for-4 for the Vikings. Alison Verba was 3-for-4 with a double.

Scott and Thomas were each 2-for-3 in the second game while Wiegman and Verba were each 2-for-4. Thomas had a bases-loaded double in the third inning.

Richland 9, Bishop Guilfoyle 0

ALTOONA – Freshman Nicki Mihalik threw a no-hitter, striking out 16 and giving up two walks. She also went 3-for-5 with a double and scored two runs.

Lauren Keffer was 3-for-4 with two hits, including a home run. Maura Koshute went 3-for-3 with a run scored.

Conemaugh Valley 6, C. Township 1

Holly Glass struck out nine and gave up one walk in leading Conemaugh Valley over visiting Conemaugh Township.

Indians pitchers Britany Siehl and Courtney Blank combined for 10 strikeouts, giving up a walk and 11 hits.

Conemaugh Valley used a three-run third to break the game open. Jamie Cekada and Sammi Britton singled. Then Darla Pollino, Jen Percinsky and Beth Kendera hit RBI singles.

Kendera finished 3-for-3 with three RBIs. Cekada and Pollino doubled.

The Indians’ only hit was a single by Blank.

Windber 4, Berlin 3

WINDBER – Brooke Schreyer and Alyssa Ott each went 2-for-3, scored a run and drove in another for the Ramblers.

Chloe Huston doubled and scored while Sarah Berkey tripled and scored for Windber (4-3), which got a strong start from Jill Penatzer, who threw a six-hitter, striking out four while walking one.

Megan DeMartino struck out 12 and walked one for Berlin (3-2).

Kristen Hankinson went 3-for-4 with a triple for the Mountaineers while Sami Johnson doubled, drove in a run and scored another.

Penn Cambria 11, B. McCort 1

CRESSON – Penn Cambria pitcher Kate Reese struck out 10 while allowing no walks and four hits. She also tripled, scored twice and drove in a run.

Brittany Vinglish was 2-for-3 with two runs scored and three RBIs. Rachael McCloskey scored three times and Kayla Freeman scored twice for the Panthers.

Central Cambria 16, Westmont 1

EBENSBURG – Amy Espe’s third-inning grand slam highlighted Central Cambria’s win.

Taylor Swatsworth doubled twice and drove in two runs for the Red Devils while teammate Breanne James singled, doubled and scored twice.

Somerset 9, Cambria Heights 6

PATTON – Nichole Shaffer’s two-run home run highlighted Somerset’s victory.

Alyssa Anna doubled twice for the hosts.

She scored two runs and drove in two more.

Bishop Carroll 4, Johnstown 2

EBENSBURG – Ashley Shook tripled, singled and drove in a run to lead Bishop Carroll.

Lindsy Sammarco and Krista Krug had doubles for the Huskies while Kayla Legros singled twice. Winning pitcher Gabby Gueguen struck out seven.

Kassie Sabo doubled and homered in the sixth inning for Johnstown.

Northern Cambria 11, Laurel Valley 0

NEW FLORENCE – Becky Britton, Ashley Baker and Sammi Kollar had multiple hits for Northern Cambria.

Baker, the winning pitcher, struck out nine.

Chestnut Ridge 14, McConnellsburg 1

McCONNELLSBURG – Jessalyn Neatrour went 3-for-4 with three RBIs and Kayla Gates was 3-for-3 with two RBIs in leading Chestnut Ridge.

Stefanie McCoy, Brittany Mock and Maria Walter had two hits each. Mock drove in two runs and Walter one.

Mock and Amber Crawford doubled. Neatrour and Alana Weyant tripled.

HIGH SCHOOL BASEBALL

Central Cambria 8, Westmont 6

Mario DeYulis cracked a two-run triple in the top of the eighth inning to give Central Cambria a win at Westmont.

The Red Devils’ Luke Trotz was 2-for-3 with two runs scored.

A. J. Rievel went 2-for-3 for the hosts. His two-run homer in the seventh inning sent the game into extra innings.

Bishop Guilfoyle 12, Richland 4

Billy Beard’s 5-for-5 day included a home run, three hits, five RBIs and two runs scored to lead Bishop Guilfoyle to a win at Richland.

Ryan Sylvia and Zach Solarczyk had two hits each for the Rams.

Windber 13, Berlin 8

WINDBER – Erick Strapple and Cameron Ursino each homered to lead Windber.

Strapple’s three-run homer highlighted a seven-run first inning for the Ramblers

(2-6), but Ursino’s solo blast put them ahead for good after Berlin had tied the game in the top of the second.

Dan Berkey had two doubles for Windber while Jacob Wissinger tripled.

Tyler Hoffman went 3-for-4 with a double and five RBIs for the Mountaineers

(2-4) while Tyrel Stockwell doubled.

Conemaugh Valley 15, Shanksville 0

SHANKSVILLE – Jimmy Britton struck out nine in five shutout innings for Conemaugh Valley.

He and teammate Alex Roberts each had a home run and three hits. John Pudliner had four hits for the Blue Jays.

Somerset 7, Cambria Heights 5

SOMERSET – Austin Sleek’s home run highlighted Somerset’s win. Sleek relieved Somerset starter Michael Flyte in the fourth inning and picked up the win.

Sleek, Zach Helsley, Max Marker, Myles Ream and Cameron Darr had two hits apiece for the Eagles.

Bryce Brawley drove in two runs for the Highlanders.

Northern Cambria 19, Blairsville 9

NORTHERN CAMBRIA – Andy Hancharik went 2-for-3 with a three-run double in Northern Cambria’s 12-run first inning.

Winning pitcher Joel Polites went 2-for-3 and Joe Yuhas was 2-for-3 with a double.

Scott Harsh was 2-for-3 with a double for Blairsville.

Blacklick Valley 21, Harmony 2

NANTY GLO – Brandon Garver went 4-for-4 with a triple and four RBIs to lead Blacklick in a three-inning victory.

Austin Crowe and Robert Maul went

2-for-3 while Caleb Palko and Kyle Silko were 2-for-3. Silko struck out four and allowed two hits against the Owls.

North Star 7, Meyersdale 5

MEYERSDALE – Winning pitcher Josh Purchase went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and three RBIs to lead North Star.

Cory Bloom went 3-for-3 for the Cougars.

B. McCort 13, Penn Cambria 3

Joe Hrbal pitched three innings of shutout relief and went 3-for-4 with a triple, four RBIs and a run scored to lead host Bishop McCort.

Crushers DH Sean Lenhart was 2-for-4 with three RBIs; Jim Stenger was 2-for-3 with a double, a run scored and two RBIs; Travis Antolik hit a home run, scored three runs and drove in two; Matt McMillen doubled and scored; Matt Kastelic had a hit and scored twice; Jesse Cooper had a hit and scored three times.

Mike Kearney scored a run and drove in another for the visitors. Shane Hartline was 1-for-2 with a run scored and Justin Myers had a hit, a double and a RBI.

Laurel Valley 15, Purchase Line 4

COMMODORE – Brett Marabito went 4-for-4 with four runs scored as Laurel Valley beat host Purchase Line in six innings.

Laurel Valley starter Ryan Bealonis gave up four runs in the first inning but kept Purchase Line (1-5) off the board the rest of the way, walking one and striking out seven.

Johnny Jones went 3-for-4 with five RBIs for the Rams (4-2).

Marion Center 4, United 3

ARMAGH – Jeff Fyock had two hits as Marion Center edged host United.

The Lions (5-2) got a strong effort from Ryan Merle, who struck out six in the complete-game loss while walking just one.

Adam Magalich had two hits for United.

 

RUNNING

Two area men finish in Boston

BOSTON – Two men from The Tribune-Democrat’s coverage area finished the Boston Marathon on Monday.

Charles Walters of Confluence, 51, finished the 26.2-mile course in three hours, 19 minutes and four seconds.

Windber’s Paul Donati, 50, conquered the course in 3:50.42.



SOFTBALL

Second Colt Classic on tap

NORTHERN CAMBRIA – The second Colt Classic high school girls tournament will be held on Saturday.

Northern Cambria hosts Penn Cambria in the 9 a.m. opener, followed by a game between Portage and Bishop Carroll at 10:30 a.m.

The consolation is scheduled for 12:15 p.m., with the championship at 2.



BASEBALL

Mount splits doubleheader

CRESSON – Mount Aloysius first baseman Mark Saxman, a Chestnut Ridge graduate, became the school’s home run leader on Monday as the Mounties (11-18) split a doubleheader with visiting IUP

(24-21), winning the first game 11-10 and falling in the nightcap 13-11.

Saxman now has seven home runs.

UPJ drops in NCBWA poll

Pitt-Johnstown, which went 1-2 last week, slipped a spot from

No. 7 to No. 8 in the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association NCAA Division II Atlantic Region Poll released on Monday.

   The Mountain Cats split a doubleheader at Clarion and lost 9-1 at Alderson-Broaddus.

Kutztown held onto the top spot for the second straight week.



HOCKEY

Chiefs ready

to sell jerseys

The Johnstown Chiefs announced Monday that a little more than two weeks remain in the online auction of their game-worn jerseys from April third’s final home game.

Eighteen jerseys are available in the auction which is being hosted by the MeiGray Group (www.meigray.com) with bids beginning at $200. The jerseys feature a patch on the left chest which commemorates the Chiefs’ final game in the ECHL. The final day to place bids is on May 5.

 

FOOTBALL

Harris joins staff at Cal

CALIFORNIA, Pa. – Former Pitt coach Walt Harris was introduced Monday as the offensive coordinator for California (Pa.).

Harris will work with a Vulcans program that has captured five-consecutive Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West titles and appeared in three straight NCAA National Semifinals.

Harris most recently served as the assistant head coach and passing game coordinator at Akron last season. He previously served as the head coach at Pacific (1989-91), Pitt (1997-2004) and Stanford (05-06).
