EBENSBURG – Marcus Lee hammered out 22 points to help Bishop Carroll down Cambria Heights in an LHAC showdown.

Scott Ranck scored 11 points and Nik Suckinos added 10 in the winning effort.

The Highlanders’ Isaac Vescovi dropped in 13 points with 11 more coming from Nathan Bearer.

Penn Cambria 83 Central Cambria 51

CRESSON – Penn Cambria raced out to an 18-4 lead after a quarter and used 26 points and 10 boards from A.J. Leahey to take down the Red Devils. The Panthers also received 11 points and five assists from Mack Behe.

Scott Holsinger led the Central Cambria charge with 15 points while Tanner Ambrisco supplied 14 points and Will Seymour, 10. 

Westmont Hilltop 43 Richland 42

Host Westmont Hilltop used 10 points from Jordan Brant and 10 boards from Conor Mendelson in a win over rival Richland.

The Rams were given a game-high 20 points from Kyle Flick along with 10 points from Luke Shertzer.

High School Girls

Con. Valley 66 Shanksville 19

Host Conemaugh Valley held the Vikings to eight points or fewer in every quarter in an emphatic win.

Emily McCray scored 11 points and grabbed nine boards while Lexi Hody and Becca Hagerich each scored 10 points. Jamie Cekada dished out nine assists in the win.

Shanksville-Stonycreek’s Kayla Stockenus scored 16 points in the loss.

Turkeyfoot Valley 57 Ferndale 42

Katie Ryan scored 27 points, and Sadie Kiskus added 14 as Turkeyfoot Valley beat host Ferndale.

Elizabeth Chobany had 28 points and 13 steals for Ferndale.

Hannah Richards had 10 rebounds, and Chaliah Kerr had 13 boards for the Yellow Jackets.

Portage 47 Meyersdale 37

MEYERSDALE – Olivia McCabe scored 22 points to lead visiting Portage past Meyersdale.

The Mustangs built a 13-point halftime advantage.

Kyley Dunmeyer had 15 points, and Abigail Stahl added 12 for host Meyersdale.

Blacklick Valley 70 Salisbury-Elk Lick 45

SALISBURY – Allison Thomas’ game-high 21 points helped the Vikings to victory over the Elks. Breanna Rege tallied 15 points and Heather Marsh added 14 more for the guests, who led 35-15 at halftime.

Emily Lowery’s 17-point night sparked Salisbury-Elk Lick, which also received a dozen points from Kylee Short.

Marion Center 47 United 31

ARMAGH – Chantel Glasser scored 13 points, and Karlie Snyder added 12 as visiting Marion Center beat United.

Jenny Irvin had nine rebounds for the Stingers.

United’s Eden Bloom netted 12 points and grabbed nine rebounds. Taylor Mack had nine rebounds and five steals. Laura Brilhart had eight boards.

WINDBER – Hannah Navarro’s 11 points led all scorers as Windber rolled to a one-sided win

Lauren Vasas had nine steals and Stephanie Ponczek had five while handing out a team-high five assists for the Ramblers.

HYNDMAN – Visiting Shade saw Emma Spinelli ring up 19 points and Lexie Rapsky add another 13 in its win over the Hornets.

HOPE for Hyndman was led by Karly Willison’s 16 points. Teammate Sara Leydig scored 10 in the loss.

College Women

Pitt-Johnstown 71 W.Va. Wesleyan 67

BUCKHANNON, W.Va. – The Pitt-Johnstown women’s basketball team saw a 16-point halftime lead disappear, but the Lady Cats prevailed in overtime at West Virginia Wesleyan on Thursday night.

The Lady Cats made 5 of 6 free throw attempts down the stretch to preserve the victory.

Rachel Johnson had a career-high 26 points and 11 rebounds, and Kelsey Sleighter had 17 points for UPJ (6-6 overall, 4-5 WVIAC).

The Lady Cats outscored the Bobcats 13-3 over the final 4:43 of the opening half to take a 16-point halftime lead.

West Virginia Wesleyan used a 10-2 spurt, capped by Kerry Conroy's jumper, to make it 51-45 with 8:19 to play. After UPJ reestablishd a 58-47 advantage, the Bobcats went on an 11-0 run to tie the game at 58-all, forcing overtime on Allie Browne’s 3-pointer with 40 seconds remaining in regulation.

In overtime, Johnson netted five consecutive points to give the Lady Cats a 66-62 lead, before Pitt-Johnstown made five free throws on six attempts to win.

College Men

W.Va. Wesleyan 74 Pitt-Johnstown 69

BUCKHANNON, W.Va. – West Virginia Wesleyan College erased a 10-point halftime deficit with a 26-8 run to open the second half on its way to handing the Mountain Cats a WVIAC road loss. 

Nick Novak scored 19 points to lead four Pitt-Johnstown players who scored in double figures.  Pitt-Johnstown has dropped its last four games and slipped to 6-6 overall and 3-6 in conference-play.

Jordan Miller’s 3-pointer gave UPJ a 12-point advantage with 1:51 left in the opening half and the Mountain Cats led 40-30 at intermission.

But the Bobcats scored the first 12 points of the second half to lead 42-40.

T.J. Thompson's 3-pointer extended the run to 26-8 and built the Bobcat lead to 58-46 midway through the half. Novak's bucket with 1:20 to play got the Mountain Cats to within two, but West Virginia Wesleyan secured the win.

Ian Vescovi had 16 points and eight rebounds for UPJ. Andrew Cressler had 12 points, and Miller added 14 points.

 Kelsey Williams had game-highs of 28 points and 16 rebounds for Wesleyan.

Penn Highlands 67 Pitt-Titusville 50

Penn Highlands defeated the Panthers of Pitt-Titusville, 67-50 in their first home game of the season. 

The Black Bears had four players in double figures led by Rashaud Kelley’s 15, Josh Corbett’s 14 while Grant Speigle and Jordan Swauger contributed 12 points each. 

Pitt-Titusville’s Mark Houston led all scorers with 16 points.

Monmouth 65

St. Francis 60

WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. – Jesse Steele led Monmouth with 17 points as the Hawks held off St. Francis for a  Northeast Conference victory.

Steele was 6-of-15 shooting, including 5 of 8 from 3-point range, as Monmouth (6-10, 1-2) knocked down 9 of 20 from beyond the arc.

The Red Flash (2-13, 1-2) held a 42-37 advantage in rebounds but shot just 31 percent (18 of 58) from the field and couldn’t overcome a 37-28 halftime deficit.

St. Francis closed the gap quickly with a 10-2 run early in the second half and trailed Monmouth 41-38. The Red Flash led briefly following Dominique Major’s 3-pointer with 10:36 left and forced a 52-all tie on Earl Brown’s three-point play with 8:39 remaining, but committed five turnovers in the ensuing 5 minutes as Monmouth pulled away.

Brown had 11 points and 11 rebounds for his fourth straight double-double.

Northwestern 70 Penn State 54

STATE COLLEGE – Dave Sobolewski scored 18 points and Jared Swopshire added 17 as Northwestern handled cold-shooting Penn State with ease in a Big Ten Conference victory.

The Wildcats (10-6, 1-2) used a 25-4 run over an 11-minute span to lead by as many as 17 points, 33-16, in the first half. Penn State didn’t score a basket for nearly seven minutes during that span.

Northwestern shooters maintained their touch after the break, as the Wildcats made 5 of 10 from 3-point range in the second half. Freshman Kale Abrahamson matched his season-high with three 3s in the game.

Penn State (8-7, 0-3) struggled all night to find a rhythm offensively. The Nittany Lions, who were led by 20 points from guard D.J. Newbill, shot just 31.6 percent (18 of 57) from the floor and were just 3 of 15 beyond the arc.

College

UPJ to host Lake Erie

Coach Pat Pecora and the NCAA Division II 12th-ranked Mountain Cat wrestlers return home to put their three-match winning streak on the line against Lake Erie (OH) College at 7 tonight at the Sports Center.

The 4-2 Mountain Cats are led by All-Americans Dave Fogle (133 pounds), Jack Bachman (149) and Travis McKillop (184 ), and national qualifier Gary Lantz (174).

In the most recent national rankings, Fogle and McKillop are ranked eighth in their weight classes.

Eight Mountain Cats are ranked in the Super Region I rankings, including, Fogle and McKillop who are both ranked first. Dave Cawley (141) is third.  Bachman and Lantz are ranked fourth, while Evan Link (125) and Josh Duplin (285) are fifth, and Nikos Garafola (197) is sixth.

Lake Erie, under fourth-year Head Coach Kevin Hoogenboom, comes in with a 6-2 dual meet record. The Storm are coming off of a 3-1 showing at the 2012 Newberry (S.C.) Duals on December 8 that included a 26-10 win over then No. 20 UNC-Pembroke and a narrow 25-21 loss to then No. 5-ranked Newberry. Lake Erie is led by All-American and NCAA No. 3-ranked Matt Vandermeer (165) and national qualifier Austin Gillihan (133).

Last season UPJ defeated host Lake Erie 25-9 in the only meeting of the programs since the Storm became members of NCAA Division II in 2009.
