SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. —
Three periods of regulation and an overtime session were not enough to settle matters as the Johnstown Tomahawks defeated the Soo Eagles in a shootout 5-4.
The shootout featured nine attempts between both teams. Soo got shootout goals from Sean Murphy and Michael Covach. Johnstown got shootout goals from Mitch Hall, Cody Gylling and Jordan Watt.
The Tomahawks overcame a two-goal deficit to capture the victory. Johnstown fell behind 3-1 after a goal by the Eagles’ Alexander Taulien at 13:22 in the second period.
The Tomahawks tied things up at
4-4 on a goal by Connor Wright at 11:24 in the third period.
Johnstown’s offense was clicking better than usual and put 47 shots on goal during the game, better than the 26.3 shots per game it averages.
The Tomahawks were helped by Gylling, who had two goals and one assist. Gylling scored the first of his two goals at 1:24 into the second period to make the score 1-1.
Mitch Kontny picked up the assist. Gylling’s next tally made the score 3-3 with 9:19 left in the third period.
Johnstown earned a power play opportunity when Robin Hoglund was put in the box for elbowing. Kontny assisted on the tally.
Johnstown also got a goal from Hall as well. In addition, Johnstown received assists from Zack Wallace, who had one.
Soo’s normally stingy defense allowed more goals than usual. The Eagles average 2.5 goals allowed per game.
Soo relied on a core group of players for most of its offense, as Taulien, Murphy and Pat Thompson took 19 of the team’s 35 shots.
The Eagles were led by Brandon Adams, who racked up two goals. Adams scored the first of his two goals on the power play at 5:04 into the second period to make the score 2-1 Soo.
A high sticking penalty on Jake Fairchild had put Soo on the power play. Jared VanWormer picked up the assist. Adams’ next tally on the power play made the score 4-3 Soo with 9:01 left in the third period.
The Eagles had gotten the advantage when the Tomahawks' Brandon Reinholz was sent off for roughing. Eric Rivard provided the assist.
Soo also got points from Murphy, who also registered one goal and one assist. More assists for Soo came via Alex Robert, Pat Gazzillo, McFarlanne and Covach, who each chipped in one.
Collin Brennan made 31 saves for Johnstown on 35 shots.
The Tomahawks incurred 14 minutes in penalty time with seven minors. Soo took out Zach Nagelvoort after he had made 37 saves and installed Tyler Marble in goal, where he finished with five saves and the overtime.
The Eagles incurred 14 minutes in penalty time with seven minors.
