High School Softball

Blacklick Valley 13

Windber 4


NANTY GLO – Blacklick Valley ran its unbeaten streak to 12-0 on Tuesday in a victory over visiting Windber.

Hailee Scott went 5-for-5 including a double and a triple while Alison Verba went 3-for-4 with a pair of home runs for the Vikings. Blacklick’s Carley Smith was 3-for-4 with a double, Megan Thomas was 2-for-5 and winning pitcher Lauren Wiegman, who struck out seven, was 2-for-3.

Kayla Kormanik was 2-for-3 and Chloe Huston went 3-for-4 with a double for the Ramblers.

Richland 9, Bedford 1

Ella Tessari went 3-for-4 with a double and one run scored, and Nicki Mihalik went 2-for-4 with a double and two runs scored as Richland beat visiting Bedford.

Kaleigh Hudak had a hit and scored twice. Maura Koshute singled and scored two runs. Mihalik struck out 10 batters in the win.

Bedford’s Kacey Blevins had three of the Bisons four hits.

Conemaugh Valley 3 Rockwood 0

Holly Glass pitched a two-hit shutout with eight strikeouts as Conemaugh Valley beat visiting Rockwood.

Valley’s Jamie Cekada and Sammi Britton each singled in the first inning, and Darla Pollino’s groundout plated Cekada.

In the sixth inning Britton walked and scored on Pollino’s single. Courtesy runner Tori Reese scored on a dropped third strike.

Chestnut Ridge 15

Tussey Mountain 3


NEW PARIS – Brittany Mock had two hits and four RBIs, and Kayla Gates had two hits and drove in three runs as Chestnut Ridge defeated visiting Tussey Mountain.

Tiffany Clingerman and Stefanie McCoy each had two hits for 10-1 Ridge.

Northern Cambria 11

Penns Manor 1


CLYMER – Ashley Baker had 13 strikeouts and two walks in a three-hitter as Northern Cambria defeated host Penns Manor.

Jenna Bobik and Giana Butterworth each went 3-for-3 for the Colts. Butterworth doubled in the fourth inning.

Portage 6, Ferndale 0

PORTAGE – Lydia Gorba had

13 strikeouts and walked three as Portage shut out visiting Ferndale.

Gorba went 2-for-2 and scored a run to help her own cause. Teammate Kaitlyn Dividock added a single, walked twice and scored a pair of runs for the Mustangs (5-4).

Brittany Eisenhuth was 2-for-4 for the Yellow Jackets (1-9).

Penn Cambria 5

Bishop Guilfoyle 0


ALTOONA - Kate Reese struck out 15 and walked three in a two-hitter against Bishop Guilfoyle

Reese was 2-for-4 at the plate with a double for the Panthers (6-4).

Beth Cocola had a double for the Marauders (2-7).

Johnstown 9, Somerset 7

SOMERSET – Freshman Amber Mangus was 3-for-5 with a double, three runs scored and two RBIs as Johnstown held off host Somerset for the win.

Seniors Brittany Zucco, Kassie Sabo and Lindsay Rogers all had two hits for the Trojans with Zucco scoring a run and driving in another, Sabo scoring a run and driving in two and Rogers scoring two and driving in three.

Freshman Kiersten Szczur earned her first varsity win with Sabo getting the save.

For the Eagles, Jaime Emert was 2-for-5, Nichole Landis was 2-for-4 and scored two and Brooke Spangler scored a pair of runs.

Central Cambria 18

Bishop Carroll 7


EBENSBURG – Central Cambria and Bishop Carroll combined for eight home runs – five for the victorious Red Devils including a grand slam by Kacey Haluska.

Kiersten Lorditch, Aimee Espe, Taylor Swatsworth and Breanne James had the other Central Cambria home runs while James, Haluska and Brooke Forcellini all contributed doubles and Lexi Murin added a triple for the Red Devils (10-1).

Haluska and Espe each drove in four runs while Lorditch and Swatsworth had three RBIs apiece.

Lindsy Sammarco pounded three home runs, going 4-for-4, with six RBIs for the Huskies (8-4).

Forest Hills 10

Cambria Heights 2


SIDMAN – Forest Hills pounded out 17 hits to improve its record to 10-1.

Erica Wirfel went 4-for-4 with a double for the Rangers, who also got two doubles and a single from Kayleigh Wolfhope, three singles from Megan Gould and a double and a single from Gab Mickus.

Danielle Bodek homered for the Highlanders.

College Softball

McCort grad sets

St. Vincent mark


Bishop McCort graduate Emily Petrowsky, a sophomore shortstop at

St. Vincent College, broke the school’s single-season home run record in dramatic fashion on Tuesday afternoon.

With two outs in the seventh inning, Petrowsky hit a three-run home run to propel the Bearcats to a 6-3 victory over Washington & Jefferson College. It was her sixth home run of the season, breaking the previous mark of five set in 2006 by Jen Bialobok. The six long balls place Petrowsky second in the Presidents Athletic Conference, just one behind the leader, Brittany Wegman of Thomas More College.

Petrowsky has hit safely in seven straight games. On the season, she is batting .278 (22-79) with four doubles and a team-high 20 RBIs to go with her six home runs.

She has started all 29 games at shortstop for the 16-13 Bearcats.

Petrowsky helped Westmont Hilltop graduate Shauna Hetrick earn the complete game victory, as the lefty scattered seven hits and struck out one in seven innings pitched. She is now 10-7 on the season with 109 strikeouts and 15 complete games. Another Bishop McCort grad, junior centerfielder Leanna Seminsky, was 1-for-2 with two walks and two runs scored in the victory.

Mount sweeps

Frostburg State


CRESSON – Mount Aloysius swept a doubleheader from Frostburg State on Tuesday winning 4-2 in the first game and 9-1 in the nightcap.

In the two games, Andy O’Neal was

4-for-6 with two doubles and Whitney Giedroc was 3-for-5, scored three and drove in two. Jessica Seasoltz picked up both wins on the mound and is 14-5 for the season.

Mount Aloysius improved to 22-10 overall, 15-3 in the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference.

A pair of wins Saturday against Medaille College would move the Mounties into first place in the conference.

High School Baseball

Somerset 13, Johnstown 1


Zach Helsley had three hits, scored a run and drove in two for Somerset as the Golden Eagles defeated host Johnstown in five innings.

Winning pitcher Myles Ream, who struck out four in the three-hitter, was 2-for-3 with a double while teammate Devin Pritts was 2-for-4, drove in two and scored twice for Somerset (9-2).

John King had a double for the Trojans (5-7).

Conemaugh Township 10

North Star 0


DAVIDSVILLE – Dan Blank went

2-for-3 with a triple, and Jordan Shroyer went 2-for-3 as Conemaugh Township blanked visiting North Star.

Dillon Boyer tripled in a run in the bottom of the sixth to put the mercy-rule into effect. Kyle Zambanini had a two-run double in the third and as the winning pitcher faced 20 batters, only two over the minimum for six innings.

North Star’s Cory Bloom and Zach Miller each singled for the Cougars’ hits.

Richland 11, Bedford 0

BEDFORD – Eric Montag tossed a two-hit shutout in Richland’s five-inning victory.

Tyler Crawford went 3-for-4 with a double and home run for the Rams, 8-1, while Ryan Sylvia was 3-for-3 with a double and triple. Brett Morgenstern had two hits and Dan Gray had a solo homer.

Ryan Salt and Brian Gibbons accounted for Bedford’s two hits.

Ferndale 10, Portage 3

PORTAGE – Five of Ferndale’s

10 hits were home runs in a win at Portage.

Donny Blasko had a two-run home for the Yellow Jackets, while Tanner Kulback, Devin Murphy, Ian Havener and Ian Helsel all had solo shots.

Kulback and Helsel both went 2-for-4, while Helsel added a double. Havener was 2-for-3 with a double.

Taylor Swires went 2-for-3 for the Mustangs, including a two-run homer in the sixth inning.

Windber 4

Blacklick Valley 2


NANTY GLO – Tyler Zabrucky was 3-for-4 with a double helping Windber to double up host Blacklick Valley.

Jake Wissinger and Steve Reininger were both 2-for-3 and the pair scored three of the Ramblers four runs.

Dalton Cesarz and Brandon Garber each had a hit for the Vikings.

Hoffmans garner honors


LORETTO – On Tuesday, the Northeast Conference announced the recipients of the 2009-10 Winter Scholar-Athlete Awards, with a pair of Hoffmans from St. Francis bringing home honors.

Senior basketball player Kurt Hoffman of Johnstown and senior distance runner Anna Hoffman – no relation – each received 2009-10 Winter Scholar-Athlete awards in their respective sports.

Kurt Hoffman has been a three-year starter for the Red Flash and helped lead the team to their first Northeast Conference tournament berth since the 2004-05 season. The senior forward averaged 4.9 points per game and finished third on the team with an average of 3.6 rebounds per game. He led the team in field-goal percentage, hitting 56.1 percent of his shots. One of the team’s captains, Hoffman was named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District II first-team and is a member of Kappa Mu Epsilon Math Honor Society and Delta Epsilon Sigma National Scholastic Honor Society.

Currently a student-teacher, Hoffman is a mathematics/secondary education major with a 3.81 grade point average.

Anna Hoffman is an elementary education/special education major, and carries a 3.89 GPA. She is a two-time ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District first-team honoree, and has made the SFU dean’s list and NEC Academic Honor roll in each season she was eligible.

Basketball  

SFU adds two recruits


LORETTO – The 2010-11 St. Francis men’s basketball roster is nearly complete after Anthony Goode and Jon Taylor recently signed their national letter of intent forms to join the Red Flash.

Goode is a 6-0 point guard from Randallstown, Md. Taylor, a 6-6 forward, will receive an associate degree from Montgomery College-Germantown.

Additionally, coach Don Friday announced that junior forward Cedric Latimer and freshman forward/center Ron Johnson will not return to the program in 2010-11.

Goode and Taylor will join four other players who had previously committed to playing for the Red Flash: Freshmen Scott Eatherton, Kyheim Hall, Kameron Ritter and Storm Stanley.
