Cole solid in Curve debut

ALTOONA — Gerrit Cole’s first start with Class AA Altoona wasn’t dominating, but it was still quite effective with the Curve making him a winner in his AA debut Wednesday night at Peoples Natural Gas Field.

Cole, who was selected No. 1 overall by the Pirates in last year’s MLB Draft, worked five innings and struck out six with no walks as the Curve downed the New Britain Rock Cats 9-4.

Prior to his advancement to Altoona, Cole registered a 5-1 record with Class A Bradenton, collecting 69 strikeouts in 67 innings pitched with a 2.55 ERA.

Cole was perfect through the first three innings before surrendering a leadoff double to Aaron Hicks, who later scored on Chris Colabello’s two-out single.

Hicks’ single to center in the fifth scored Evan Bigley to make it 8-2.

Cole threw 74 pitches, 52 for strikes.

The Curve hammered out four-run rallies in the first and fourth innings in support of Cole.

Altoona’s offensive sparks were

provided by Robbie Grossman and Quincy Latimore, who each hit three-run home runs.

Latimore swatted his home run in the first off Brett Jacobson while Grossman parked a Luis Perdomo offering in the fourth.
