JOHNSTOWN — Two pitchers who threw no-hitters earned the monthly Point Stadium Award nominations for June and July.
Martella’s Pharmacy right-hander Landon Wahl and Delweld left-hander Brett Vescovi tossed no-hitters within 10 days of each other at the Point. As monthly winners, the hurlers now are eligible to earn the annual Point Stadium Award.
June: Martella’s Wahl earned the June monthly award by tossing a no-hitter against Roxberry Creamery on June 30.
He struck out seven and walked two as Martella’s won 1-0. Wahl retired the side in order five times, and only one ball was hit out of the infield.
Of his 74 pitches, Wahl threw 50 strikes.
July: Delweld’s Vescovi almost threw a perfect game in a 3-0 victory over Roxberry Creamery on July 10.
Vescovi walked the Creamery’s first batter and then retired 21 consecutive hitters.
The left-hander struck out two. After the lead-off walk, a Roxberry Creamery batter had a fly out. Delweld then turned a double play to end the first inning. Vescovi faced only the minimum
21 batters during his gem.
The June Play of the Month was tied to Wahl’s no-hitter. Martella’s second baseman Colin Harrington made a diving stop in the hole between first and second base in the bottom of the fifth inning. Harrington threw from his knees to record the out and keep the no-hitter alive.
The July Play of the Month was made by Martella’s center fielder Jon Kirby, who threw out Delweld’s J.R. Tenney at the plate in the fifth inning to prevent a run on July 22. Martella’s won 5-0 to force an extra day of the season before falling to the regular-season champs in the finale.
