JOHNSTOWN —
Luke Williams and Tony Strasiser created energy for Martella’s Pharmacy in decidedly different ways during Tuesday afternoon’s 7-1 win over Schenectady at Point Stadium.
Williams swatted a titanic two-run home run to center give the locals a 2-1 lead in the second. Strasiser added to the Martella’s lead in the sixth when his extra-base hit to the right-field corner caromed off the fence and past Jayson Osborne, allowing Strasiser to score on an inside-the-park home run, boosting Martella’s to add four more runs to eliminate Schenectady PNA.
Martella’s moves on to face Baltimore, which fell to Livonia 12-7.
Livonia 12, Baltimore 7
After Livonia knocked off perennial-power New Orleans on opening day, the Rams came back on Tuesday to defeat defending AAABA champion Youse’s Maryland Orioles of Baltimore 12-7 at Lilly.
The Michigan squad went ahead early and stayed in front most of the game. But Baltimore took its first lead in the seventh, 7-6. Instead of folding, the Rams fought back, scoring four runs in the eighth and two more in the ninth.
Livonia pounded out 16 hits against four Baltimore pitchers.
Cleveland 19, New York 4
Cleveland hits two more home runs, both grand slams, as the Ohio Blizzard beat the Long Island Lions, 19-4, in the winner's bracket at Westmont High School.
Jack LaMarca's third home run of the tournament was a grand slam in the fourth inning for Cleveland, which hit six home runs on opening day. Andy Urbanic added another grand slam in the sixth. He finished with five RBI.
Cleveland plays Livonia in a winner's bracket semifinal on Wednesday. New York plays New Orleans in an elimination game.
New Brunswick 15, Youngstown 2
The New Brunswick Matrix add another win to their record yesterday when they beat the Glaciers 15-2.
The Matrix started off strong scoring 13 runs in the first three innings.
New Brunswick plays Columbus in the other winner's bracket semifinals.
Columbus 5, Philadelphia 4
After playing six innings of spotty defense on Tuesday afternoon, the Columbus Hawks ironically won their second-round AAABA National Tournament game thanks to a pair of costly late errors by their opponents, the Philadelphia Bandits.
Columbus trailed 4-0 because of four errors that led to three unearned runs.
Then, in the bottom of the sixth, a Philadelphia throwing error allowed Hawks centerfielder Taylor Snare to score. The play changed the course of the contest at Greater Johnstown Middle School's Fichtner Field.
Thanks to another Bandit error in the seventh, Columbus tacked on two more unearned runs and eventually collected a come-from-behind 5-4 victory. Columbus produced four total unearned runs throughout the two rallies.
Zanesville 5, Chicago South Shore 1
With a combined effort from Dylan Davy and Cody Day, the Zanesville Junior Pioneers survived for another day with a 5-1 win over Chicago South Shore Tuesday morning at Point Stadium.
Davy pitched 7 1/3 innings while Day pitched the remaining 1 2/3 in the non-save situation. Zanesville broke a 1-all tie in the third with a pair of runs then added two more runs in the later innings against South Shore starter Shaun Johnson, who pitched all nine innings for the Chicago squad.
Day collected two of Zanesville’s seven hits with Luis Meija and Chris Buckey each contributing a run batted in. Alex Bembenek collected two doubles and drove in South Shore’s lone run.
New Orleans 8, Chicago Metro 6
Center fielder Sean McMullen hit three home runs to lead New Orleans to a loser’s bracket victory over the feisty Chicago Metro Elgin Aces. NORD right-handers Randy LeBlanc and John DeArmond combined to only give up two earned runs to stave off elimination at Haschak Field in Portage.
McMullen hit solo home runs in the first, fourth, and fifth innings to lead the NORD Boosters. All of the home runs were hit to right field over the 337-foot marker. McMullen nearly hit a fourth home run in four consecutive at-bats, but was robbed on a nice diving catch by Connor McHugh, the right fielder, to strand two runners with two outs.
