Girls

Bishop McCort 62 Somerset 14


Jill Kegg scored 31 points to lead Bishop McCort to a win at home on Wednesday night.

Kegg, a senior, also hit five 3-pointers. She now has 1,001 points for her career.

Westmont 69, Richland 51

Gina Rievel led all scorers with a career-high 28 points, including a school record eight 3-pointers, as Westmont solidified its perch at the top of Laurel Highlands Section 2 with a win at rival Richland.

Paige Lamberson and Erin Rodgers also scored in double figures for the Hilltoppers with 14 and 11 points, respectively.

Sarah Pfeil topped the Rams with 19 points and added seven rebounds. Katie Gehlmann supplied 14 points and six boards while Kaija Holtzman had 11 points and five rebounds for Richland.

Berlin 71, Shanksville 46

BERLIN – Berlin Brothersvalley tore out to a 21-11 lead after the first quarter and never looked back in a WestPAC South win over visiting Shanksville-Stonycreek.

Aleesa Fieg paced the Mountaineers (18-2) with 19 points while Shelby Coughenour added 13 and Erica Craig chipped in with 11.

Kayla Stockenus topped all scorers with 24 points for the Vikings, who also got 12 points from Kayla Maust.

Forest Hills 56, Bishop Guilfoyle 41

ALTOONA – Becky Bard and Casey Gallaher had 17 points each to lead Forest Hills, with Brianna Kostan adding 11.

Kayla Bates and Courtney Becker topped the hosts with 12 and 11 points, respectively.

Blacklick Valley 64, Portage 61

NANTY GLO – Four Blacklick Valley players scored in double figures as the Vikings surprised visiting Portage in a WestPAC North game.

Heather Marsh topped the hosts with 13 points and added 15 rebounds. Brooke Rhoades supplied 12 points for the Vikings, who also got 11 points each from Alison Verba and Allison Thomas.

Olivia McCabe scored a game-high 30 points for the Mustangs, who also received 16 points from Kaitlyn Dividock. 

Bishop Carroll 54, Cambria Heights 43

PATTON – Brooke Mento scored 17 points and Lauren Wyland added 14 as visiting Bishop Carroll defeated Cambria Heights.

Casey Henry topped the Highlanders with 16 points.

Penn Cambria 56, Central Cambria 33

EBENSBURG – Brianna Kearney’s 25 points led the way as Penn Cambria won.

Bri Wasser scored 10 points to top the Red Devils.

Windber 60, Ferndale 45

Windber pulled away in the fourth quarter to get a road win over Ferndale in the WestPAC North.

Jill Penatzer topped the Ramblers with 20 points while Ongie Null added 16.

The Yellow Jackets got 16 points each from Gabby Kull and Elizabeth Chobany.

Bedford 63, Johnstown 60 (OT)

Bedford outscored Greater Johnstown 9-6 in overtime to earn a Laurel Highlands road win.

The Bisons were led by a game-high 21 points from Summer Hartung, who had four 3-pointers, including three in the fourth quarter to help bring Bedford back from a 32-26 halftime deficit.

Maggi Secrest added 13 points, including the late free throw that sent the contest to overtime.

The Trojans got 18 points on six 3-pointers, from Tykeisha Ellis. Tashayla Smith supplied 16 points and 10 rebounds for Johnstown, which also got 12 points from Janay Myers and nine rebounds from Ikea Burns.

Conemaugh Twp. 61, North Star 47

BOSWELL – Katie Reckner scored 13 points and grabbed 13 rebounds for Conemaugh Township.

Lindy Baer led the Indians with 19 points while Carly Baer and Megan Boyer added 10 each. Boyer also had seven steals.

Rachel Druist and Bradie Rhoades topped North Star with 17 and 10 points, respectively.

Meyersdale 46, Shade 29

CAIRNBROOK – Kylee Dunmyer’s 16 points and 14 more from Abby Stahl led Meyersdale.

Becca Muha scored a game-high 20 points to front the Panthers.

Boys

Northern Cambria 52, Saltsburg 37


NORTHERN CAMBRIA - Northern Cambria went 7 of 9 from the free-throw line in the fourth quarter in a win over Saltsburg that clinched the Heritage Conference title for the Colts.

“Every night we’ve had to go out there and play our best in order to win the conference title,” Northern Cambria coach Dan Weber said. “It means a lot to the kids and to the program for us to achieve the first of our goals that we’ve set this season.

“Our kids are hungry for more and we have to hope that we’re peaking at the right time as we get ready for the playoffs.”

The Colts (16-3) got a game-high 21 points from Adam Polites. Jeff Hogan added 15 points and 13 rebounds for Northern Cambria, which also got five assists and five steals from Derek Bearer.

Steve Richards scored 13 points to lead the Trojans, who also got 11 points from Ben Shirley.

Westmont 81, Forest Hills 69

SIDMAN - Westmont rolled out to a 27-9 first-quarter advantage on its way to a road win over Forest Hills in a non-section Laurel Highlands game.

Quentin Brandon led all scorers with 36 points for the Hilltoppers, who also got 14 points from Mike Vliet and 12 from Brady Hamer.

Justin Smith led a quartet of double-digit scorers for the Rangers with 18 points. Neil Wysocki, Cody Moss and Eric Daniels added 14, 11 and 10 points, respectively for Forest Hills.

    The AAABA League opens on Tuesday at Point Stadium with two new, but familiar managers, a new but familiar sponsor, an expanded interleague schedule and two new franchises committed to the 2013 season.
    A lot of activity took place during the offseason, including the AAABA national committee’s vote to expand the age limit to 21 years old beginning in 2013.

    Paige Lumley was on an emotional roller coaster and seeing silver on Saturday at the PIAA Track and Field Championships at Shippensburg University.
    The Richland senior had state record jumps  twice during the triple jump competition, but ended up with a silver–medal leap of 40 feet,
    1¾ inches.
    Defending state champion, second-seeded  junior Lanae Newsome of Brookville, won with a jump of 40-3½.

    Matt Dull finished his athletic career with his best on Saturday at the PIAA Track and Field Championships at Shippensburg University.
    The Chestnut Ridge senior ran a career-best time of 38.12 to finish second in the 300 hurdles final, also setting another school record.

    Matt Hague was hit by a pitch from Rafael Dolis with the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth inning, and the Pittsburgh Pirates sent the Chicago Cubs to their 11th straight loss with a 3-2 victory Saturday night.
    Hague took a 96 mph fastball from Dolis (2-4) in the back near the shoulder blade, scoring Jose Tabata and eliciting an incredulous look to the sky by the Cubs reliever.
