COLLEGE

Area athletes on honor roll

A number of area athletes attending Duquesne University are on the honor roll announced last month by Atlantic 10 Commissioner Bernadette McGlade for the spring semester.

There at 1,164 student-athletes on the list, which honors those with a 3.5 or higher grade point average.

It includes freshman Laurie Barnhart, a Ligonier Valley graduate who participates in track and field; sophomore Ariana Cort, a Westmont Hilltop graduate who also participates in track and field; freshman Michael Garver, a Bishop McCort product who runs cross country and participates in track and field; freshman Reid Griffith, a Westmont graduate who plays golf; and sophomore Samantha Pollino, a Conemaugh Valley graduate who plays basketball.



SFU’s Fisher among nominees

LORETTO - St. Francis University senior Russel Fisher, a member of the Red Flash football team, has been nominated for 2009 Allstate/AFCA Good Works Team, as announced by Allstate Insurance and the American Football Coaches Association.

Fisher is one of 106 players nominated for their outstanding contributions in the areas of volunteerism and civic involvement. The voting panel will select two 11-player teams, one comprised of players from Division I Football Subdivision Series, and one made up of players from Division I Football Championship Series, Divisions II and III and the NAIA.

The Hawaiian-born Fisher is known around the SFU campus for not only his skill on the field, but also his impact on the community. He has volunteered at Alicia Richardson Sports for Kids Day, Relay for Life and the Special Olympics. As a member of the Phi Kappa Theta fraternity, Fisher has also donated his time and efforts to the Adopt-A-Grandparent program and participates in fundraising efforts for the Children’s Miracle Network.

A defensive lineman and team captain, Fisher finished fifth on the team in tackles with 40 in 2008.

He had 11.5 tackles for loss of

37 yards, the second most by a member of the Red Flash defense. Fisher was also second on the team with three sacks for a loss of 24 yards, and added three pass break ups, a forced fumble and a blocked kick.



BASKETBALL

Wysocki earns all-star status

Neil Wysocki, a sophomore guard at Forest Hills, has been named an all-star at the Keystone State Invitational basketball camp held at Slippery Rock University.

The Keystone State camps are held each year at Albright and Slippery Rock.

Wysocki is the son of Jill and Ernest Wysocki of Windber.



TRACK

Herbein adds

to medals haul

YORK - John Herbein of Johnstown finished the weekend with four gold and four silver medals in eight events during Keystone State Games competition at York Central High School.

The 71-year-old, participating in the 70-74 year-old age group, won a pair of gold medals in weight lifting on Saturday.

On Sunday, he added golds in the 400 meters and shot put as well as silver medals in javelin, discus, the 100 and 200.

    Bill Mazeroski, an elite fielder who made it to the Hall of Fame because of his many Gold Gloves and one big swing, now has a bronze statue honoring that most memorable moment.
    Four of Mazeroski’s 1960 Pirates teammates tugged away a protective cover Sunday to unveil a 14-foot, 2,000-pound statue depicting the second baseman, the only player to end a World Series Game 7 with a home run.

    Ryan Zimmerman drove in four runs, Adam Dunn homered and Jason Marquis won his second in a row after previously going winless all season as the Nationals beat the Pirates 8-1 in a matchup of last-place clubs Sunday.

    Justin Hartwig, the Steelers' starting center the past two seasons, was cut Saturday after the team failed to work out a trade for him.
    Hartwig, due to make $2,080,000 this season, was beaten out by first-round draft pick Maurkice Pouncey.

    Windber coach Phil DeMarco entered Saturday’s game against Rockwood concerned with injuries, including one that held Jarid Cover, the Ramblers’ leading rusher from a season ago, out of training camp and offseason workouts.
    Those concerns may have been alleviated after Cover’s 127-yard performance in Windber’s 55-14 victory over Rockwood.

    His Golden Eagles held a baseball-like 2-0 advantage midway through the final quarter and had played well in many areas throughout a LHAC season opener against Bishop Guilfoyle at Mansion Park.
