Area swimmers place in Md.
COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Two Johnstown YMCA swimmers were placewinners Tuesday at the National YMCA Long Course National Championships held at the University of Maryland.
Joe Ward, a Westmont Hilltop graduate, finished fourth in the
50-meter freestyle with a time of 24:24 while Bishop McCort graduate Mitch Smith finished 23rd overall in the 100-meter backstroke competition with a time of 1:01:84.
The Greater Johnstown YMCA Swim Team sent 15 swimmers to this year's event.
BASEBALL
AAABA regionals open Saturday
AAABA regionals in Altoona and Zanesville, Ohio, will begin on Saturday.
Teams participating in Altoona are Baltimore, Philadelphia, Maryland State and Altoona. Game times on Saturday and Sunday are noon and 4 p.m.
In Zanesville, Toledo takes on Cleveland in the opener at 4 p.m. Saturday with the Junior Pioneers facing Chicago South Shore in the nightcap at 7.
There will also be a two-team best-of-3 playoff between New York and New Brunswick (N.J.). New York will host the playoff, with the winner advancing to Johnstown.
Ex-Mount player named assistant
CRESSON – Former Mount Aloysius standout Matt Duval has been named an assistant coach for the Benedictine College baseball team.
Duval joins the coaching staff after a seven-month stint as a hitting instructor at the Carmen Fusco Pro Baseball Academy in Harrisburg. He also had college coaching stops at Burlington County College in New Jersey and at Mount Aloysius.
While playing for Mount Aloysius, Duval was an All-AMCC performer on the field and earned academic all-conference honors for his work in the classroom. He batted .337 his senior season for the Mounties and started all
34 games at shortstop.
Duval will begin his tenure with Benedictine College, which is located in Atchison, Kansas approximately 40 miles northwest of Kansas City, Mo., in mid-August and will act as the recruiting coordinator and work with the hitters.
The Pennsylvania native, who graduated from Mount Aloysius in 2008 with a bachelor of arts degree in business administration, will pursue his MBA while at Benedictine.
