Local Basketball in Brief 1/23/13

PITTSBURGH — High School Girls

Cambria County Christian 47 DuBois Christian 7

DuBOIS – Natalie Sokira had 22 points and 10 rebounds to lead Cambria County Christian. Alexis Wolfe added 21 points to the winning total.



North Star 56, Ferndale 30

Kayla Rice scored 14 points and Courtney Schrock had 11 to lead North Star to victory at Ferndale.

Elizabeth Chobany’s 15 points topped the Yellow Jackets.



Ligonier Valley 56 Conemaugh Township 43

LIGONIER – Maddy Grimm scored

22 points, grabbed nine rebounds and eight steals and had six assists in leading Ligonier Valley.

Teammate Stephanie Heming scored

11 points, Kyra Ludwig had nine steals and four assists and Amanda Ross got eight rebounds.



Windber 47, Blacklick Valley 44

WINDBER – Lauren Vasas and Cassie Wentz led the way with 11 and 10 points, respectively, as Windber notched a win.

Vasas had 12 rebounds and seven steals, Wentz had five rebounds and four assists and Kaitlyn Weaver had seven rebounds and six steals for the Ramblers.

Allison Thomas led Blacklick Valley with 18 points.



High School Boys

Northern Cambria 77, United 37

ARMAGH – Adam Polites scored

24 points, including six 3-pointers, as visiting Northern Cambria defeated United.

Polites moved within three points of 1,000 and will try for the milestone at home against Heritage Conference rival Ligonier Valley on Thursday.

Jeff Hogan had 15 points for the 12-3 Colts. Caleb McAdoo led winless United with 10 points.



Cambria County Christian 59 DuBois Christian 35

DuBOIS – Dom Williams scored

18 points, Zach Wingard had 16 and Andy Paros netted 14 as visiting Cambria County Christian beat DuBois Christian.

Jared Tubbs had 12 points for DuBois, and Ty Peters had 11.

Conemaugh Valley 78 Turkeyfoot Valley 52

CONFLUENCE – Blake Furman scored 24 points, Nick Roberts had 20 and they each pulled down 14 rebounds to lead Conemaugh Valley to victory on Monday night.

Austin Orndorff’s 22 points led Turkeyfoot Valley.

    Wandy Rodriguez allowed one run over seven strong innings and Neil Walker hit a two-run single as the Pittsburgh Pirates beat the Milwaukee Brewers 3-1 on Wednesday night.
    Rodriguez (4-2) gave up six hits, walking one and striking out five.

  • Penn State guard leaving for pro career

    Penn State guard Jermaine Marshall, the team’s second-leading scorer, is foregoing his senior year of eligibility to pursue a professional career overseas.
    The team announced the surprise move in a statement Wednesday. The 6-foot-4 Marshall, who is on schedule to graduate this summer, cited his family including a 1-year-old son, in making his decision.

    Speaking often in an angry tone that might be otherwise reserved for an argument with an official, O’Brien told reporters in a conference call that the health and safety of his players were his top priorities.

    He struck out nine and the Pirates teed off on New York’s pitching for an 11-2 win over the Mets on Saturday.

  • Shade softball thriving on Karl’s watch

    Frank Karl coached the majority of the girls who comprise Shade High School’s softball team from the time they played T-ball and coach pitch.
    Karl was there when the group, as elementary-school students, once rallied from an 18-run deficit to win a game, and he hoped to be there when the group reached the varsity level.

    This year, Junior won’t be on the Point Stadium field for the pregame hoopla associated with opening night of the 69th annual AAABA Tournament.
    He won’t watch as dozens of Corvettes and hundreds of baseball players enter through the left-field gate with their respective teams from cities such as Baltimore, New Orleans, New Brunswick and Altoona.
