LORETTO – Jonathon Williams had 19 points and eight rebounds, and Wagner led by 16 points at halftime en route to victory over St. Francis in a Northeast Conference game on Saturday.
Williams made 8 of 10 shots from the field, and Wagner shot 57.6 percent (34 of 59) and held St. Francis to 35.7 percent (20 of 56). The Seahawks also won the battle on the boards 35-25.
Eric Fanning scored 15 points, Orlando Parker had 14 points and seven rebounds and Latif Rivers and Kenneth Ortiz contributed 10 points apiece for the Seahawks (11-8, 5-3) in their second consecutive victory.
Ronnie Drinnon and Ben Millaud-Meunier scored 12 points each for the Red Flash (1-18, 1-7).
From an 18-10 advantage with 8:48 left in the first half, Wagner took control, outscoring St. Francis 12-2 to lead
30-12 with 4:57 remaining.
Mount Aloysius 70 PSU-Behrend 60
CRESSON – Mount Aloysius completed the season sweep of AMCC perennial power Penn State-Behrend.
The win puts Mount Aloysius back into first place in the Allegheny Mountian Collegaite Conference.
Mount Aloysius shot just 1-9 from behind the arc in the first half, and trailed 27-21 at the half.
The early part of the second half saw more of the same, with the Penn State-Behrend lead ballooning to 11 points with 11:32 to play in the game.
But a Demetrius Davis jumper sparked a 17-4 run over the next seven minutes to give Mount Aloysius a 2-point lead with 3:55 to play.
The Mounties were able to finish out the game strong at the foul line, sinking 16-18 shots in the second half, compared to Penn State-Behrend's 5-7.
Women
St. Francis 80 Wagner 43
LORETTO – Alli Williams put together her 12th double-double performance of the season as the St. Francis women knocked off Wagner.
St. Francis (10-8, 5-2) took command early in the first half and never looked back as the Flash ended a two-game conference losing skid.
Jordyn Peck led the way for the Seahawks with 12 points and five rebounds. Williams tallied 19 points and 16 rebounds while Rebecca Keegan and Nickia Gibbs each added 10.
Mount Aloysius 86 PSU-Behrend 81
CRESSON – Junior guard Lindsy Sammarco scored her 1,000th career point in a double-overtime victory.
Sammarco entered the game averaging 18.4 points per game and 22 points shy of the scoring plateau. She hit a 3-pointer to earn her 1,000th point with a 2:57 to go in the second overtime.
Mount Aloysius held a 63-60 edge with seven seconds to go in regulation, but Penn State-Behrend's Brianna Bayly hit a 3-pointer to force the first extra period.
Freshman Kaylee Roop hit a pair of free throws with four seconds to play in the first overtime to give Mount Aloysius a 76-74 lead. But Bayly was able to hit a jumper at the buzzer to force the second overtime.
This time, the Lady Mounties grabbed the early lead with back-to-back layups by Becky Bard and did not look back.
Sammarco finished with a game-high 27 points and 10 rebounds. Bard contributed 26 points and Olivia Rupp had 18 points and 11 rebounds.
Georgetown 69
Pitt 57
WASHINGTON – The Pitt women saw a furious late second-half rally fall short at McDonough Arena.
Sophomore Brianna Kiesel paced the Panthers (9-10, 0-6) with 22 points and a career-high 10 rebounds. Junior Asia Logan tallied 19 points, 15 in the second half. Junior Marquel Davis chipped in a career-best 10 boards.
Senior Sugar Rodgers led the Hoyas with a game-high 25 points and nine assists.
Trailing by 14 at intermission, Pitt cut the lead to 33-21 to start the second half on a short jumper from Kiesel.
GU recorded 10 of the game’s next 12 points to extend its lead to 43-23 with 16:35 to play with all four field goals scored over the run tallied in the paint.
The Hoyas built their advantage to as many as 23 points, lastly on a put-back from junior Andrea White with 12:09 remaining. Pitt matched GU for scores over the next two possessions as the Hoyas moved to a 22-point edge (57-35) at the 8:15 mark.
The Panthers used a 14-4 run – commenced by back-to-back three-pointers from Abby Dowd and Logan – to cut the deficit to 12 at 61-49 with 5:05 showing. Logan closed the surge with a fast-break lay-up. An unforced turnover on Pitt’s next trip down the court stopped the run.
After two free throws by Rodgers, Cora McManus – again – made it an even dozen down with an offensive follow for the Panthers. The Hoyas pulled back ahead by 14 points on two more from the free throw line, but Pitt responded with a 4-0 run to close to 65-55 on a triple from Kiesel with 1:42 left.
GU scored on its next trip down the court and a flurry of three’s bounced off the rim for Pitt as its rally came too late.

College players dominate Point nominations
Pitt-Johnstown junior Jake Warner was perfect and extremely productive at the plate while earning the first two monthly nominations for the 2013 Point Stadium Award in February and March.
Mount Aloysius sophomore Derrick Capiak nearly reached perfection to take the April nomination. -
Pirates roll past Brewers
Wandy Rodriguez allowed one run over seven strong innings and Neil Walker hit a two-run single as the Pittsburgh Pirates beat the Milwaukee Brewers 3-1 on Wednesday night.
Rodriguez (4-2) gave up six hits, walking one and striking out five. -
Dupuis coming through for Penguins

Penn State guard leaving for pro career
Penn State guard Jermaine Marshall, the team’s second-leading scorer, is foregoing his senior year of eligibility to pursue a professional career overseas.
The team announced the surprise move in a statement Wednesday. The 6-foot-4 Marshall, who is on schedule to graduate this summer, cited his family including a 1-year-old son, in making his decision. -

Penn State coach Bill O’Brien is fervently disputing suggestions raised in a report that player medical care has been compromised after the team doctor was replaced.
Speaking often in an angry tone that might be otherwise reserved for an argument with an official, O’Brien told reporters in a conference call that the health and safety of his players were his top priorities. -

Brooks Orpik’s goal would have been memorable even if wasn’t in overtime and didn’t put the Pittsburgh Penguins into the second round of the Stanley Cup playoffs.

Liriano key to Pirates' victory
Francisco Liriano finally got to pitch for Pittsburgh and, just like that, the Pirates looked like a much better team.
He struck out nine and the Pirates teed off on New York’s pitching for an 11-2 win over the Mets on Saturday. -
Shade softball thriving on Karl’s watch
Frank Karl coached the majority of the girls who comprise Shade High School’s softball team from the time they played T-ball and coach pitch.
Karl was there when the group, as elementary-school students, once rallied from an 18-run deficit to win a game, and he hoped to be there when the group reached the varsity level. -
MIKE MASTOVICH: Junior put his stamp on tourney
This year, Junior won’t be on the Point Stadium field for the pregame hoopla associated with opening night of the 69th annual AAABA Tournament.
He won’t watch as dozens of Corvettes and hundreds of baseball players enter through the left-field gate with their respective teams from cities such as Baltimore, New Orleans, New Brunswick and Altoona. -
East Stroudsburg wins PSAC championship
Senior Brian Ernst threw eight innings without allowing an earned run on just two days rest and East Stroudsburg University used a five-run fifth inning to secure its first PSAC baseball championship since 1971 with a 7-1 win over defending champion West Chester on Saturday at Point Stadium.
The Warriors (33-16), who set a school record with their 33rd win, earned the PSAC’s automatic bid to the NCAA Division II Tournament thanks in large part to an outstanding effort by Ernst, who was named the PSAC Tournament MVP. - More Local Sports Headlines
