Area stars compete at PIAAs
LEWISBURG – A pair of area swimmers clocked 10th in their respective events, but no local swimmers qualified for championship finals during the first day of the PIAA Swimming and Diving Championships at Bucknell University on Wednesday.
Richland’s Jon Kofmehl swam his way to 10th in the 200-meter IM with a time of 2 minutes, 2.36 seconds. Kelly Dorian of Westmont placed 10th in the 100-meter butterfly with a time of 53.04 seconds.
Kofmehl, seeded 18th in 200 IM, recovered to win his consolation final race with a time of 2:02.36. He’ll return to the pool today in the 100-meter backstroke, where he carries in an eighth seed.
Dorian took second in his consolation race, finishing behind .26 seconds behind Radnor’s Robbie Norton.
Dorian also claimed 20th in the 200 freestyle (1:50.85). His Hilltopper teammate, Kevin Koul, took 32nd in the 50 free with a 23.16 mark. Westmont’s 200-meter freestyle relay team finished 20th at 1:32.64.
Ligonier Valley girls swimmer Kalyn Kramer finished 32nd in the 50-meter freestyle, clocking in at 26.12. The Westmont Hilltop girls relay team finished 23rd in the 200 free relay at 1:46.89.
SOCCER
UPJ receives recognition
Coach Crystal Dye’s Pitt-Johnstown women’s soccer team recently received a plaque from the NCAA recognizing its accomplishment of leading NCAA Division II in scoring, at 5.19 goals a game during the 2006 season.
In addition, freshman forward Alicia Zack finished second in the country in both points per game and goals per game. Zack scored 22 goals and collected nine assists in 16 matches-played. Her .50 assists per game also ranked 25th in NCAA Division II.
In 16 matches played, UPJ netted 83 goals to its opponents’ 28. The Lady Cats finished with a 12-3-1 overall record in just the second year of the program’s existence.
UPJ also outshot its opponents 435-148 and accumulated 224 points, compared to just 72 for its opponents.
Forward Kellie Stevens (Conemaugh Township) ended her senior season ranked 25th in goals per game at .88, and 39th in points per game at 1.88.
BASEBALL
Mountain Cats swept at Seton Hill
Coach Todd Williams’ Mountain Cats fell to 5-9 on the season after suffering 4-3 and 3-1 losses at Seton Hill University.
Sophomore outfielder Matt Hanley went-2-for-4 with a pair of RBI, but Seton Hill scratched out a run in the eighth inning off of Mountain Cat reliever Eric Faint (Westmont Hilltop) to score a 4-3 win in the opener. Freshman Dan Mangini had three hits in four at-bats, and senior catcher Paul Pentz (Johnstown) collected two hits.
In the nightcap, freshman outfielder Brad Dale’s (Windber) sacrifice fly in the fifth inning tied the score at 1, but the Griffins added two more runs to take Game 2 3-1. Senior first baseman Bill Colosimo (Forest Hills) had two hits for UPJ.
Junior right hander Zach Toth suffered the loss after giving up two runs on five hits in five innings pitched.
With the sweep, Seton Hill raised its record to 11-5.
COLLEGE
Eisentrout fills new role
Former Berlin Brothersvalley standout Travis Eisentrout has become the athletic business manager for California University of Pennsylvania.
Eisentrout earned his undergraduate degree from California in sports management in 2005 and added a sports management graduate degree in 2006. He spent the past season as an assistant coach at Pitt-Johnstown, prior to joining the Vulcan administrative staff.
Eisentrout played his final two collegiate basketball seasons at California and was the team’s top 3-point shooter each year. He also played a season at Liberty University and IUP before to transferring to Cal.

What the Reapers encountered was an emotional and purple-clad Jess’ Army.
The Yellow Jackets were able to cultivate the emotion and high spirits to a 7-1 win in the second Jess Ambroe Classic. -

Rams roll past Blue Jays
It had been a while since the Richland Rams had played a varsity hockey game. Though the Rams’ last action came on Jan. 12, Richland showed little rust as it trounced Conemaugh Valley 12-1 Friday evening at Cambria County War Memorial.
Richland (7-3-2) posted four goals in the game’s first 4:33 as it buried the Blue Jays (1-14) early. -

Mountain Cats look to get Pecora closer to No. 500
In some ways, it’s the perfect time for Pitt-Johnstown wrestling coach Pat Pecora to be reflective.
After all, his eighth-ranked Mountain Cats will be holding their final home match this evening when Anderson visits at 7 p.m. Pecora will be saying goodbye to six seniors, which is always an emotional time for him.
But he’s not ready to look back on his legendary career, even as he closes in on his 500th career win. -
Judge sets May trial date in Sandusky abuse case
A judge said Friday he would decide soon whether to grant former Penn State assistant coach Jerry Sandusky greater freedom – and visits from his young grandchildren – while he awaits trial on child sex-abuse charges, but prosecutors countered that Sandusky’s home is not a safe place for children.
Judge John Cleland set a tentative trial date of May 14 for Sandusky and promised to rule quickly on a number of other issues, including dueling requests for changes to his bail restrictions. -
Jordan Staal expected to return to Pens’ lineup today
Jordan Staal’s left knee is fine. His face, however, could use some work.
The Pittsburgh Penguins center plans to play today against Winnipeg in his first game since injuring the knee in a loss to the New York Rangers on Jan. 6.
The road back has gone smoothly enough until Staal started practicing with his teammates this week. -
UPDATED Bedford advances in PIAA wrestling in odd way
It’s not often that a team can win a match at the PIAA Class AA Dual-Meet Championships while giving up two forfeits, but that’s exactly what Bedford did this afternoon at the Giant Center.
In fact, the Bisons won 30-29 over Pen Argyl because they forfeited.
