Local sports briefs 12/22

HIGH SCHOOL BOYS

Conemaugh Township 61, Blacklick Valley 60

NANTY GLO – Matt Duray scored a game-high 24 points and Tim Risch scored 10 for Conemaugh Township in a double-overtime win over Blacklick Valley in WestPAC action on Friday night.

The win was Indians coach Scott Cable’s 400th victory.

Taylor Holby also scored a game-high 24 points to lead Blacklick Valley.

Matt VanFossen added 17 points and Mike McDermott scored 10 for the Vikings.

Shade 49, Shanksville 38

SHANKSVILLE – Josh Barnes and Joel Kaminsky scored 12 points apiece to help Shade stay unbeaten with a win.

Michael Abramowich scored 10 points for Shanksville.

Berlin 73, Meyersdale 30

BERLIN – Twelve players scored for Berlin in its win over Meyersdale.

Berlin’s Seth Snyder led all scorers with 27 points.

Tyler Sechler scored 12 points and Ryan Moore had 11 points for the Red Raiders.

Conemaugh Valley 56, Ferndale 43

Conemaugh Valley’s Kyle Marshall hit for 13 points and Jimmy Lupek had 12 as the Blue Jays registered a road win in the WestPAC.

Jason Preuss added 10 points in the victory.

Bill Dill had 16 points and 16 rebounds for the Yellow Jackets, who got a 16-point effort from Brandon Miller.

North Star 73, Portage 52

PORTAGE – Luke Zellem and Alijah Petrilla each scored 18 points as the Cougars won on the road.

Zellem also pulled down 12 rebounds for North Star, which recorded 23 steals as a team.

Winston Shaulis chipped in 10 points for the Cougars.

Jade Zatek and Andrew Maul each put up 11 points for the Mustangs.

Penns Manor 60, United 55

ARMAGH – Carson Rhea led Penns Manor with 20 points and Joe Gillo scored 12 in a win over United.

Bobby Simon scored a game-high 34 points and Ryan Murrell added 10 for the Lions.

Johnstown 51, Richland 48

Darese Coleman’s three-pointer with 19 seconds left gave Johnstown a one-point lead and the Trojans went on to beat Richland.

Paul Weatherly scored a game-high 25 points for host Johnstown.

Nick Niel had 12 points for Richland.

Bedford 61, Cambria Heights 46

BEDFORD – Zach Hess scored 15 points to lead Bedford to a win over Cambria Heights.

Dan Smith and Mark Scott each added 13 for the Bisons. Ian Vescovi led Cambria Heights with 14 points and Steve Sharbaugh added 12.

Salisbury-Elk Lick 58, Rockwood 54

SALISBURY – Shane Knopsnyder scored a game-high 23 points and grabbed 21 rebounds for Salisbury-Elk Lick in a win over Rockwood.

Knopsnyder also blocked 14 shots, dished out three assists and had three steals.

Rich Vogt scored 11 and Jared Green added 10 points for the Elks.

Riley Harrold scored 19 points to lead Rockwood and Rex Baker scored 18.

David Garnes Memorial Tournament

Bath County, Ky. 62, Somerset 52

ASHLAND, Ky. – Blandon Clemens scored 22 points, Zak Metz scored 21 points and Taylor Maze added 10 to lead Bath County, Ky., to a win over Somerset.

Austin Ankney led Somerset with 14 points, Ryan Fisher scored 13 and Evan Walsh added 11.

HIGH SCHOOL GIRLS

Conemaugh Township 72, Salisbury-Elk Lick 23

DAVIDSVILLE – Jamie Gennett scored 17 points had nine steals, five assists and six rebounds for Conemaugh Township in a lopsided win over Salisbury-Elk Lick.

Megan Maurer scored 14 points and Stephanie Straka added 10 points for the Indians.

Conemaugh Township outscored Salisbury-Elk Lick 48-9 in the first half.

Bishop Carroll 39, Somerset 33

SOMERSET – Lindsay Sammarco and Erika Illig each scored 11 points to lead Bishop Carroll over Somerset.

Nicole Shaffer scored 10 points for Somerset.

Central Cambria 47, Penn Cambria 31

CRESSON – Amber Latterner scored 18 points to lead Central Cambria past Penn Cambria.

Ali Maruca added 13 points for the Red Devils.

Mandy Reig had 13 points and Lauren Krug scored 10 for the Panthers.

Richland 54, Johnstown 46

Lauren Hoover scored a game-high 25 points and Lauren Brant added 11 for Richland in a win over visiting Johnstown.

Lauren Carosi led the Trojans with 20 points and Tanea Preston added 19.

Northern Cambria 60, Ligonier Valley 22

NORTHERN CAMBRIA – Brittany Sedlock led the Colts with 17 points in a big win on the road.

Jen Valeria added 14 points for Northern Cambria, which had a 20-point lead after the opening quarter.

Emily Daugherty’s 10 points paced the Mounties.

Marion Center 53, Laurel Valley 48

MARION CENTER – Lauren Glasser led Marion Center with a game-high 20 points.

Laurel Valley’s Grace Altimus scored 17 points, Erica LaMantia scored 15 and Casey Wynn added 10.

Cambria Heights 79, Bedford 45

PATTON – Erin Hoover scored 17 points, Linsey Bodek had 15 points and Kristie Gwizdak added 13 points in Cambria Heights’ victory over Bedford.

Bedford’s Brandy Harris scored a game-high 23 points.

College Men

Duquesne 99, St. Francis 80

PITTSBURGH – Aaron Jackson scored 16 points and Shawn James had 11 points, five rebounds and seven blocks, as Duquesne beat St. Francis Friday night.

Kieron Achara added 14 points and six rebounds for Duquesne (7-3).

Damian Saunders and Kojo Mensah scored 12 points apiece for the Dukes.

Devin Sweetney led St. Francis (3-8) with 18 points. Steve Profeta added 14, Chris Berry and Cale Nelson scored 11 each and Grant Suprenant had 10.

Duquesne led just 40-34 at halftime and struggled to shake loose from the Red Flash before opening a double-digit lead for good with 13:29 left on a 3-point shot by Jackson.

The win ended a three-game losing streak for Duquesne, including a 73-68 loss to No. 11 Pitt on Dec. 5.

The Dukes hadn’t played a game in 13 days.

James’ seven blocks gives him 50 for the season.

James led the nation two seasons ago while at Northeastern.

    Adam LaRoche broke open a tight game with a three-run double for his 1,000th career hit after homering for No. 999, and Gio Gonzalez took over the NL strikeout lead from teammate Stephen Strasburg by fanning 10 in seven innings Wednesday night, leading the Washington Nationals past the Pittsburgh Pirates 7-4.

    The long blast by Central Cambria’s Aimee Espe was so majestic that even Bald Eagle Area pitcher Megan Dudish had to admire it.
    “It was a bomb,” Dudish said of the first-inning drive that hit the stands behind the left-field fence. “It was really a nice hit.”

    The seventh-seeded Yellow Jackets hosted No. 10 Homer-Center as Ferndale won 1-0 in extra innings behind the pitching of senior Ian Helsel in the District 6 Class A playoffs.

How do you feel about PennDOT's plan to spend $3 million to address safety concerns on Goucher Street in the West Hills?

Considering the traffic problems that exist, the plans make sense.
It would be a waste of tax dollars that could be spent more wisely elsewhere.
I like the concept but I believe it could be scaled back.
I don't have an opinion one way or another.
