HIGHSCHOOLGIRLS

Conemaugh Valley 58, Berlin 46

Junior Taylor Gruss had 27 points, eight rebounds, five assists and four steals to lead unbeaten Conemaugh Valley past visiting Berlin in the WestPAC on Friday night.

The Blue Jays are 6-0.

Brooke Snyder scored 13 points and Melissa Paul added 10 for Berlin (2-3).

Portage 70, Salisbury 28

PORTAGE – The Mustangs opened up a 20-point first-quarter advantage and rolled to a win over the Elks.

Becca Enedy’s 16 points paced Portage, which got 11 points each from Arielle Crum and Tanea Lehman.

Blacklick Valley 38, Shanksville 27

NANTY GLO – Angie Zanin’s 15 points were a game high, and lifted Blacklick Valley to a WestPAC win over Shanksville.

Jen Wilt scored 11 points to lead Shanksville.

Conemaugh Township 81, Turkeyfoot Valley 35

CONFLUENCE – Turkeyfoot Valley jumped out to a 10-2 lead over Conemaugh Township before the Indians got on track.

Freshman Katie Reckner scored 19 points and collected 11 rebounds, Julie Byer added 17 points and Annie Bridge pitched in 13 points for the Indians (4-3).

Northern Cambria 51, Saltsburg 44

SALTSBURG – Ariel Rocco scored 16 points while Janae Dunchack and Breanna Kochinsky added 13 each to lead Northern Cambria.

North Star 57, Rockwood 13

BOSWELL – Emily Lohr had 17 points and 11 different players scored for the Cougars in a win at home.

Chelsea Danel had six assists, as did Sarah Pelesky for North Star in the WestPAC victory.

Ferndale 49, Meyersdale 30

Brittany Eisenhuth scored 31 points, had eight steals and blocked four shots as Ferndale defeated visiting Meyersdale.

Katie Vena led the Red Raiders with 13 points.

Bishop McCort 51, Bishop Carroll 40

Bishop McCort had four players reach double digits in scoring in a Laurel Highlands Athletic Conference win over Bishop Carroll.

Maria Felton and Emily Basile each scored 13 points, Sarah Pastorek had 12 and Lindsay Buchan added 10 for the Crimson Crushers (4-2).

Lindsy Sammarco had a game-high 17 points and Krista Krug added 12 for the Huskies (1-4).

Blairsville 44, United 35

ARMAGH – United held an early lead, but Blairsville was able to rally for a victory on the road.

Nicole Smith paced the Bobcats with 11 points while Tiffany Lingenfelter added 10.

Kyla Perry scored a game-high 13 points for the Lions while Kelsey Yaworski chipped in 10 points.

Marion Center 82, Laurel Valley 31

MARION CENTER – Becca Bowser scored 17 points, Kellie Ruffner put in 14 and the Stingers cruised to a Heritage Conference victory.

Amy Fairman added 10 points for the Stingers.

Westmont 55, Johnstown 35

The Hilltoppers outscored the host Trojans 11-4 in the first quarter and cruised to a victory in the LHAC.

Kayla Vliet led Westmont with 13 points while Kirsten Meenan added a dozen.

Tyneshia Smith scored a game-high 14 points for Johnstown.

Somerset 55, Richland 48

Elizabeth Barron scored 17 points, Nicole Shaffer added 12 and Chelsea Shaulis had 10 to lead Somerset at Richland.

Kaija Holtzman’s 17 points topped the Rams, who got 14 from Lauren Hoover.

Bishop Guilfoyle 43, Central Cambria 32

EBENSBURG – Bishop Guilfoyle broke out of an early scoring slump to pull away from host Central Cambria.

The unbeaten Marauders trailed 6-2 after the first quarter, but outscored the Red Devils 15-8 in the second frame to seize the lead.

Alli Williams scored a game-high 20 points for Bishop Guilfoyle and Kaleigh Floyd added 10.

Ashley Kenny and Ali Maruca scored 10 apiece for Central Cambria.

HIGHSCHOOLBOYS

Bishop Carroll 47, Bishop McCort 41

EBENSBURG – Chad Panick scored 12 points and grabbed seven rebounds, and Luke Paronish had 13 rebounds to go with nine points as the Huskies defeated the Crimson Crushers.

Jackie Moschgat added 11 points for Bishop Carroll.

Zach Freeman scored a team-high 11 points for Bishop McCort.

Johnstown 58, Westmont 50

Johnstown rallied from an early deficit to beat host Westmont and remain unbeaten.

The Trojans (4-0, 3-0 LHAC) trailed 15-5 after one quarter but tied the game at the half and took the lead for good in the third quarter.

Paul Weatherly led Johnstown with 17 points while Carlton Wyatt added 11.

Chris Kessler scored a game-high 24 points for Westmont.

Cambria Heights 66, Forest Hills 53

PATTON – Ian Vescovi had 23 points, and Devin Lansberry netted 20 as Cambria Heights defeated visiting Forest Hills. John Link had 10 for the Highlanders.

Brett Oswalt led Forest Hills with 18 points. Luke Gallaher had 12, and Brandon Gdula, 11.

Portage 61, Claysburg-Kimmel 27

PORTAGE – Alex Wolford scored 15 points and Andrew Maul 14 as Portage cruised over Claysburg-Kimmel.

Ryan Scoran gave the Mustangs a dozen points while Michael Blair’s 10 tallies topped the visitors.

Somerset 93, Richland 56

SOMERSET – The Golden Eagles scored 33 third-quarter points to pull away from the Rams.

Ryan Fisher and Cody Hemminger each had 16 points for the Golden Eagles while Anthony Papini scored 15 points.

Jeremiah Judy chipped in with 13 points for Somerset.

Jordan Rozich scored a game-high 18 points for Richland, which got 14 points from Dereck Malzi and 12 points from Bob Carbaugh.

    Adam LaRoche broke open a tight game with a three-run double for his 1,000th career hit after homering for No. 999, and Gio Gonzalez took over the NL strikeout lead from teammate Stephen Strasburg by fanning 10 in seven innings Wednesday night, leading the Washington Nationals past the Pittsburgh Pirates 7-4.

    The long blast by Central Cambria’s Aimee Espe was so majestic that even Bald Eagle Area pitcher Megan Dudish had to admire it.
    “It was a bomb,” Dudish said of the first-inning drive that hit the stands behind the left-field fence. “It was really a nice hit.”

    It was a pitchers’ duel Wednesday afternoon in Ferndale.
    The seventh-seeded Yellow Jackets hosted No. 10 Homer-Center as Ferndale won 1-0 in extra innings behind the pitching of senior Ian Helsel in the District 6 Class A playoffs.

    Leading the assault on Tuesday at Mansion Park was Richland senior Paige Lumley, who won three events – two in meet records – along with the Forest Hills girls, who captured their second straight team title.

How do you feel about PennDOT's plan to spend $3 million to address safety concerns on Goucher Street in the West Hills?

Considering the traffic problems that exist, the plans make sense.
It would be a waste of tax dollars that could be spent more wisely elsewhere.
I like the concept but I believe it could be scaled back.
I don't have an opinion one way or another.
