Richland angler gets big win

Jason Ober of Richland Township scored a major victory April 24-26 during a Stren Series FLW fishing tournament on North Carolina’s Lake Norman.

The Richland Township Volunteer Fire Department's assistant chief won the Co-angler Division of the National Guard Open and earned a $40,000 check.

Ober opened the tournament in third place with five bass weighing 9 pounds,

5 ounces. On the second day he slipped to fourth with a limit weighing 6 pounds, 9 ounces. He wrapped up his win with another limit weighing 7 pounds, 11 ounces while fishing with Kim Stricker of Howell, Mich.

Ober’s first career victory took place last year from the back of the boat at the Santee Cooper Stren event. He plans to spend three seasons fishing the FLW Tour as a co-angler before attempting to move to the front of the boat.

Stackhouse to host wild turkey clinic

Stackhouse Park will hold the fifth annual Wild Turkey Hunting Clinic from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on June 20.

Tom Hindman, Mike Horst and Kurt Rager will instruct students during the informational event.

“We’ll provide an overview for the novice hunter and be able to answer questions to help season wild turkey hunters deal with consternations that they have met in the past,” Hindman said.

The clinic is free for children and $15 for adults, and includes materials and a catered lunch.

To register for the event or for more information, contact Jim Pasco at 536-1674.

Powell Stackhouse Park is located at 998 Luzerne Street in Johnstown.

Bear complaints head Somerset notes

Somerset County WCO Brian Witherite said in an internal Pennsylvania Game Commission report that bear complaints are on the rise.

Numerous bears have been captured and relocated, with the largest being 375 pounds.

“This bear actually was processed and presented for a large group of fourth-graders from Norwin elementary school while they were attending Camp Soles,” he said.

Witherite also said that the County Envirothon was completed with Rockwood Area School District winning the overall team title.

Unlawful ATV usage has been observed on SGLs 104 and 111, according to Witherite. An increased effort in patrol has resulted in numerous citations being filed.
