Track and field
McQuillen advances at NCAA championships
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Penn State Karlee McQuillen sophomore advanced to the second day of the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Chammpionships on Wednesday.
McQuillen, a Westmont Hilltop graduate, grabbed the last qualifying spot in the javelin with a distance of 159 feet,
3 inches. Her effort was the 12th-best on the day and will carry her into Friday’s final.
Friday’s competition will mark McQuillen’s second consecutive appearance in the NCAA final. UTEP freshman Anna Wessman had the best throw in the opening round with a distance of 181-5.
ECHL
Chiefs’ Sinkewich inks two-way contract
The Johnstown Chiefs announced Wednesday that defenseman Russ Sinkewich has signed a two-way AHL/ECHL contract with the Milwaukee Admirals.
Sinkewich, 23, signed with Johnstown in February after graduating early from Bowling Green State University. As a rookie, he skated in 16 games for Johnstown and picked up his first professional point, an assist, in a 5-4 victory over Elmira on March 8.
The 6-foot-3, 205-pound blue-liner also skated in 10 AHL games with Lake Erie (5) and Milwaukee (5).
“We are happy for Russ and wish him all the best,” Chiefs coach Ian Herbers said. “At the end of last season, Russ joined us out of college, worked hard and made the most of his opportunities. He is a good person, has the right attitude and a lot of raw potential. He is a big, physical and mobile defenseman. It was a pleasure having him in Johnstown. It is a good day for Russ as well as the Chiefs.”
Judo
Third-grader earns state championship
Sierra Widmar, a third-grade student at United Joint Elementary, continues to build on an impressive Judo record that includes multiple state and junior national championships.
Widmar recently captured the state championship – her third (2007, 2008, 2009) gold medal at the event. She also won three Pennsylvania Open championships (2006, 2007, 2008) and claimed gold medals in two U.S.J.A. Junior National Championships (2007, 2008).
The daughter of Cory and Misty Widmar of Dilltown, she also won gold at the Keystone Games (2007), American Canadian International Judo Challenge (2008, 2009) and the U.S.J.F. Junior National Championships (2008).
Overall, Widmar has a competitive record of 34-2 since beginning Judo at age 5.
Baseball
McKolosky signs with Shippensburg
Westmont Hilltop graduate David McKolosky has signed a letter-of-intent to play baseball at Shippensburg University.
A three-year letterman in baseball, McKolosky was the 2007 and 2008 Offensive Player of the Year for his team and was selected to the LHAC all-conference squad this spring.
A four-year letterwinner in hockey, he was the 2009 team Offensive MVP.
McKolosky also lettered three times in football for the Hilltoppers and was an all-LHAC selection and will play in the Ken Lantzy Finest 40 game.
In baseball, McKolosky batted .424 as a junior and .383 as a senior. He drove in 30 runs.
As a pitcher, he went 3-1 with 32 strikeouts. McKolosky currently plays for Martella’s Pharmacy in the AAABA League as well as the Westmont/Ferndale Cambria Legion squad.
He is the son of Dennis and Katherine McKolosky of Westmont.

Cernic’s 9, Spangler 4
Alex Martin, Zach Henry and Jason Lechak each had a home run for Cernic’s in a win over visiting Spangler.
Somerset 14, St. Michael 4
SOMERSET – Cody Hemminger went 4-for-4 with two RBIs, Anthony Papini was 2-for-2 with three runs scored and Gunnar Smith hit a two-run homer to lead Somerset.
Chris Lazration and Colin Gdula each had a solo home run for St. Michael.
Richland/Windber 15, Nanty Glo 0
Eric Montag tossed a one-hitter as Richland/Windber picked up its first win in three innings via the mercy rule at Tony Penna Field.
Chris Kirak led the 56ers with two hits and three RBIs while Travis Gelles had two hits.
Gelles, John Klinar and Tyler Crawford each doubled while Cam Kaminsky scored three runs.
Stephen Pisarcik singled for Nanty Glo Polish Club.
Bedford 10, Meyersdale 0
BEDFORD – Byron Rose threw a four-hitter, striking out five in a five-inning shutout of Meyersdale.
Matt Snyder doubled twice for Bedford. He and teammate Shane Torbett had two RBIs apiece.
Westmont 11, Lilly 0
John Valcheff threw a one-hit shutout as host Westmont rolled to a five-inning victory.
Andy Pozun, Dan Price and Dan Grace each went 2-for-3 for Westmont. Pozun scored three runs and Price scored two.
Elliot Orlosky doubled in the third inning for Lilly’s lone hit.
AAABA League
Delweld 5, Highland Bulldogs 1
Andy Smithmyer struck out eight and combined with Patrick Smith in a three-hitter as Delweld beat the Highland Bulldogs at Roxbury Park.
In the fifth, Matt Staub hit a one-out double to center. Tyler Uphouse singled to right.
Staub scored on Matt Cornetti’s ground out. Zach Vignero drove in Uphouse with a single.
In the sixth, George Roberts hit a two-run homer. Uphouse walked and scored on Cornetti’s two-out double to left.
Principle 3, Renegades 2
Kody Donaldson struck out a dozen batters in nine innings and Tyler Hayman picked up the win in relief as Principle Development nipped the Berkley Hills Renegades in the 10-inning opener of a Point Stadium doubleheader.
Principle Development put Matt Stahl aboard with a double in the top of the 10th, then sent him to third with Andy Rubal’s sacrifice bunt.
Matt Ziance’s one-out squeeze bunt brought Stahl home with the winning run.
Rubal went 2-for-4 with an RBI while teammate Brock Porter was 2-for-3.
Sean McDonald hit a solo homer in the fourth inning for the Renegades.
Delweld 23, Highland Bulldogs 3
Delweld sent 11 batters to the plate in the five-run first and
19 in the 13-run second en route to a one-sided win over the Highland Bulldogs in Tuesday’s late game at Point Stadium.
Delweld collected 19 hits.
Nick Barbera had three hits and six RBIs, and Matt Staub had four hits and five RBIs.
Zach Vignero had three hits and drove in four runs. George Roberts had two hits and scored three runs.

Opening statement
Delweld opened defense of its AAABA League playoff title in dominating fashion on Wednesday night at Point Stadium.
Right-handed pitcher Carter Lehman tossed a seven-hit shutout as Delweld won 10-0 over regular-season champion Martella’s Pharmacy in Game 1 of a best-of-5 series. The abbreviated game went seven innings due to the mercy rule. -
Taylor returns to role in ring
Andres Taylor recently spent a couple days filming a scene for the upcoming motion picture “One For the Money” in Pittsburgh.
His role was minor. While the Johnstown boxer appreciated the “face time” he received in front of the camera, Taylor is ready to return to his real job. -
Colbert signs 5-year contract extension
Steelers director of football operations Kevin Colbert signed a five-year contract extension Wednesday, less than a week after the team re-signed coach Mike Tomlin through the 2012 season.

AAABA final series: Martella's, Delweld face off tonight
The formalities are over. Defending playoff champion Delweld and current regular-season champ Martella’s Pharmacy will play Game 1 of the best-of-5 AAABA League title series tonight at Point Stadium (7 p.m.).

St. Francis will induct 12 into sports hall of fame
Jess Zinobile became the most productive women’s basketball player in St. Francis University history during her four years at the Loretto school (1996-2000).
However, as she reflected on the Tuesday announcement that she was one of 12 athletes elected to the St. Francis University Sports Hall of Fame, she said that she never envisioned that she would experience that kind of success. -
Pirates score victory over Rockies
Zach Duke threw six solid innings to help the Pittsburgh Pirates snap a four-game skid Tuesday night with a 4-2 win over a reeling Colorado Rockies team that lost Huston Street to a freak injury before the game.

Young wrestlers get instruction
The setting and sounds were familiar, Pat Pecora enthusiastically shouting out instructions and encouragement as a group of young wrestlers watched and listened.
But this time the veteran Pitt-Johnstown wrestling coach was on the mat at Conemaugh Township High School’s gym during the middle of a heat wave rather than coaching on an icy winter night in Richland Township. -
Martella's, Delweld will contest AAABA title
Sam Watkins put an exclamation point on the effort, knocking out a two-RBI single off the left-field screen to advance his Martella’s Pharmacy team to the Johnstown AAABA League championship series with a 10-0 victory over Roxberry Creamery on Monday night in the opener of a Point Stadium doubleheader.

Top-seeded Martella’s Pharmacy opened the AAABA League playoffs Friday night by putting together two big innings en route to an 11-4 win over Roxberry Creamery at Point Stadium.
