Thompson leads

West Penn Open

Former Greater J and City Golf champion Dan Thompson leads the Western Pennsylvania Golf Association 105th Open Championship after one round at Westmoreland Country Club.

The Johnstown resident shot a 3-under-par 68 on the first day of the two-day championship.

Thompson previously won the Open in 2007, his first victory as a pro, at Nemacolin Woodlands Resort Mystic Rock course.

On Monday, Thompson had five birdies and two bogeys. He birdied three of his first five holes – Nos. 2, 4 and 5. Thompson bogeyed Nos. 7 and 10 but finished with birdies on No. 13 and No. 18.

Thompson is a former Sunnehanna Amateur player. He won four consecutive Greater J tournament titles before turning pro. He also won the City Championship once.

Johnstown’s Wes Turiano and Windber’s Patrick Greer were tied for ninth at 1-over 72 through one round. Former Johnstown resident and Sunnehanna Amateur player Al Hromulak and Bedford’s Joshua Leibfried were tied for 53rd at 6-over.

Johnstown’s Ben Kamnikar was tied for 69th at 7-over, and Johnstown’s Ben Wolfe was tied for 78th at 8-over.

Johnstown’s Taylor

tops fight card

Johnstown’s Andres Taylor will headline the “Steel Valley Rumble” boxing card on Saturday at the Memorial Field House near Youngstown, Ohio.

Taylor is undefeated in nine bouts

(8-0-1) and has four knockouts. He stopped Simon Carr in the seventh round during his most recent fight on May 2 at Cambria County War Memorial Arena.

Also on the card are prospects Mickey and Cortez Bey of Cleveland.

Pittsburgh’s Jesse Lubash, a welterweight with an 11-0-0 record, will be on the card.

AAABA League

Delweld 2, Renegades 1

Neither team scored until the seventh inning, and then Delweld needed a pair of runs in the bottom of the frame to earn a comeback win over the Renegades in the late game at Point Stadium.

Sean McDonald was hit by a pitch to open the top of the seventh. He scored on Ben Doak’s opposite-field single off the screen in left.

Tyler Uphouse walked in the bottom of the seventh and moved up Zach Vignero’s sacrifice bunt. Nick Barbera’s two-out double off the screen in left drove in Uphouse.

J.R. Tenney singled to right field, plating Barbera with the game-winning run.

Delweld starter Matt Skoner struck out six batters and Pat Smith fanned one in one inning of relief work. The Delweld hurlers combined to throw a three-hitter.

The Renegades’ John Fees had four strikeouts and five walks while holding Delweld to five hits.



Roxberry Creamery 2 Highland Bulldogs 1

Nate Antone hit a two-run homer in the fourth inning to lift Roxberry over the Highland Bulldogs at Roxbury Park.

Joe Hribar and John Terlecki combined to limit the Bulldogs to five hits – three of which came from Kyle Rose. Hribar struck out 5 in 61/3 innings while Terlecki fanned three in 12/3 innings.

Matt Whiteman, who allowed just three hits in the complete-game loss, hit a solo home run in the sixth.



Cambria Legion

Nanty Glo 6, Ebensburg 3

EBENSBURG – William Mallin struck out four batters in a three-hitter as visiting Nanty Glo defeated Ebensburg on Monday.

Carl Murowski hit a three-run homer for Nanty Glo. Dom DeYulis had a hit and drove in three runs for Ebensburg.



Lilly 7, Richland-Windber 3

Taylor Molnaird, Elliot Orlovsky and Adam Eckenrode each had two hits as Lilly defeated Richland-Windber.

Orlovsky doubled.

Shane Hartline pitched a three-hitter, striking out eight and walking six for Lilly.

John Klinar doubled for Richland-Windber.



Claysburg 8, Portage 0

CLAYSBURG – Dave McMurtrie struck out nine a two-hit shutout.

Jordan Saylor went 4-for-4 with a triple and two RBIs for Claysburg while Ricky Brown doubled and drove in two runs.

Spencer Price and Zachary Petrunak had Portage’s only hits.



Patton 4, Spangler 3

NORTHERN CAMBRIA – Patton’s Bob Ivory struck out nine, and Patton used five hits and four Spangler errors to earn a road win.

Spangler’s Adam Whalen struck out

12 batters and had two hits. Joe Weakland had two hits for Spangler.



Colleges

Three athletes honored

Three local student-athletes have been named to the spring edition of the Presidents’ Athletic Conference (PAC) honor roll.

Marybeth Rocco, a freshman from Northern Cambria, competes in women’s track and field for Waynesburg. She is majoring in marine biology.

Two other local graduates who are part of the Westminster women’s track and field team were also honored.

Central Cambria alum Kristina Scanlan is a freshman neuroscience major from Ebensburg. Jill Diamond, a junior elementary education major from Johnstown, is a Bishop McCort graduate.

In order to make the honor roll, student-athletes must have a grade-point average of 3.6 or higher on a 4.0 scale during the spring semester.
