Moot, Coon share lead

Matt Moot and Mike Coon both shot 69 Friday to share the lead after the first round of the 2009 City Championship at Berkley Hills Course.

Thomas Facciani and Jess Rager are tied for third, both with 70s with Mark Weinzierl fifth at 71.

Four golfers are tied at 72.

The second round continues today, beginning at 12:15 p.m.

Meyersdale 12, Somerset 7

SOMERSET – Cross-county rival Meyersdale got a strong outing from reliever Tyrel Stockwell, who gave up four hits in seven innings of work, striking out nine in a victory at Somerset.

Justin Donaldson was 3-for-4 with a two-run homer and four RBIs for Meyersdale. Ben Lohr and Anthony Hillegas were both 3-for-5, with Lohr scoring three runs.

Brett Christner hit a grand slam for Somerset in the first inning.



Serenko Funeral Home 9

Lilly 8

PORTAGE – Jeremy Piatak scored on a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the 10th to give Portage’s Serenko Funeral Home a win over visiting Lilly.

Ryan Scoran was 3-for-4 for Portage while Michael Pcola and Spencer Price each contributed a home run and Scott Nolan added a double.

Shane Hartline went 3-for-4 for Lilly.



Cernic’s 8, Ebensburg 1

Adam Lechak went 4-for-4 and scored a run while Alex Martin was 3-for-4 with a double and scored a run for Cernic’s in a victory over visiting Ebensburg.

Jimmy Britton got the win on the mound, striking out six and scattering five hits.

Ben Monito had two hits and scored Ebensburg’s run.



3 advance through Region 7 Legion showcase

Three Cambria County Legion League players advanced through the Region 7 showcase in Clearfield Thursday and will now play in the All-West Showcase in mid-July.

Advancing were Cody Swope, a pitcher from Claysburg; Ian Olsavsky, a catcher from Patton; and Bobby Ivory, an outfielder from Patton.

The All-West Showcase will be held

July 13 at Pullman Park in Butler.

Players who advance through that game will play in the East-West Showcase Weekend, July 25 and 26 in Harrisburg.

Renegades 10

Roxberry Creamery 6

John Fees hit a home run while Drew Shaulis and Tom Burkett each contributed a double and two runs scored as Berkley Hills Renegades defeated Roxberry Creamery Friday in the early game at Roxbury.

Ben Doak added two hits, including a double, and scored two runs for the Renegades.



Late Thursday

Bulldogs 3, Martella’s 2

Mark Saxman pitched 61/3 innings, allowing two runs on three hits and striking out eight, as the Bulldogs surprised top-ranked Martella’s Pharmacy in Thursday’s late game at Roxbury Park.

Ryan Medva, Matt Whiteman, Mike Godissart and Ethan Boyd all went 1-for-3 while Jake Norman went 1-for-2 for the Bulldogs. Kyle Rose, Whiteman and Godissart scored the Bulldogs’ runs.

Sam Watkins, Jon Kirby and Pat Kohl had the three Martella’s hits while Steve Bills and Evan Gazza scored the runs.

Area athletes in all-star game

The District 6 all-star seniors will square off against their District 4 counterparts today at 6 p.m. at the Little Lady Lions field in State College.

Several individuals will be inducted into the district Hall of Fame and special awards will also be presented.

St. Francis coach

announces additions

St. Francis University head coach Don Friday announced three additions to the 2009-10 Red Flash men’s basketball roster, giving the coaching staff a total of 10 new faces during Friday’s second season in Loretto.

Austin Fowler of Farmington Hills, Mich., Chris Johnson of Newport News, Va., and Tony Peters of Roselle, N.J., have already reported to campus for summer classes and workouts. Twelve members of SFU’s 15-player 2009-10 roster are currently on campus, including the entire true freshman class of seven.

In other Red Flash men’s basketball news, Friday announced that forward/center Randy Spaid of Portage will not return for his senior season.

Johnstown graduate Kurt Hoffman, a

6-6 senior forward, is a member of the Red Flash squad.
