Johnstown marathon off
The Greater Johnstown YMCA announced Wednesday that the 2009 marathon, which had been scheduled for Oct. 4, has been canceled.
“Due to economic times, it is not feasible to hold this event this year,” the release said. “We hope to build sponsorship supoort in 2010 so that this longstanding event can be held again next year.”
The release said that the Highmark Blue Cross/Blue Shield/Johnstown YMCA Triathlon will take place on July 18.

PORTAGE – Mike Sinosky went 3-for-3, scored four runs and drove in two more to lead Serenko Funeral Home.
Teammate Andrew J. Maul had two hits, scored two runs and drove in three.
Richland/Windber’s Rick Pfeil drove in a run with a double while Travis Gelles had an RBI single for the visitors.
Ebensburg 9, Patton 1
REVLOC – Rob Maruca struck out eight and allowed just one run in a complete-game victory for Ebensburg.
Jeff Wasilewski singled and doubled while scoring three runs and driving in two more.
Dom Deyulis two hits and three RBIs while Justin Wissinger added two hits and two RBIs.
Ian Olsavsky stroked two doubles for Patton.
AAABA League
Principle 6, Renegades 5
Matt Donaldson struck out seven in 52/3 innings and Dino Tessari went 3-for-4 with a run and two RBIs as Principle Development beat the Berkley Hills Renegades in the early game at Point Stadium.
Andy Rubal and Brock Porter each had two hits, with Rubal scored twice and Porter driving in a run and scoring another.
Mike Kastelic, Sean Lenhart each had a hit for the Renegades.
College
Watkins tops Division II in ERA
Pitt-Johnstown senior right-hander Ben Watkins led NCAA Division II in earned run average at 0.84 in the final statistics.
The Conemaugh Township graduate, who was the Atlantic Region Pitcher of the Year and a Third-Team All-American, was drafted by the New York Yankees in the 40th Round of June’s draft.
Watkins posted a 7-1 record and allowed just five earned runs in
531/3 innings. He also finished second nationally in walks allowed per nine innings at 0.68 and 15th in both strikeouts per nine innings at 10.64 and hits allowed per nine innings at 6.59.
He is pitching in the Single-A New York-Penn League for the Staten Island Yankees, where he has a 1.50 ERA in four appearances. Watkins has given up one earned run and struck out five in six innings.

Chiefs make 8 qualifying offers
PRINCETON, N.J. – The Johns-town Chiefs have made qualifying offers to eight players, the most allowed by ECHL rules.
They are: Jarrett Konkle, Ryan Del Monte, Andrew Sarauer, Andy Contois, Todd Griffith, Russ Sinkewich, R.J. Anderson and Alex Penner.
Players who already had signed a contract by July 1 did not need to receive a qualifying offer.
Of the eight qualified players, no more than four could be veterans, which are defined as those having at least 260 regular season professional hockey games played as of the start of the upcoming 2008-09 season.
Teams are not allowed to sign more than 24 players to contracts during the summer.

Pitt to play Indiana
The Pitt men’s basketball team will face perennial Big 10 power Indiana in the 15th annual Jimmy V Classic on Dec. 8 at Madison Square Garden in New York. The contest tips off at approximately
9 p.m. on ESPN. Georgetown and Butler will play in the first game of the annual doubleheader beginning at 7 p.m.
Pitt is also scheduled to participate in the O’Reilly Auto Parts CBE Classic in Kansas City, Mo. from Nov. 23-24. The four-team event will feature Pitt, Texas, Wichita State and Iowa.
