Local sports: Forest Hills girls top Penn Cambria


High School Girls

Forest Hills 52, Penn Cambria 17

SIDMAN – With Forest Hills a bit shorthanded due to some early season injuries, sophomore forward Becky Bard stepped up with a 16-point effort to lead the Rangers past Penn Cambria.

Bard added four assists for Forest Hills, which improved to 5-0 on the season.

The Rangers blew the game open early with a 16-4 edge in the first quarter, and held a 26-8 advantage at the half.

Brianna Kearney led the Panthers with eight points.

Richland 53, Johnstown 36

Kaija Holtzman scored 25 points to lead the Rams over the Trojans.

Katie Gehlmann added 10 points for Richland, which improved to 3-3.

Amber Magnus had 12 for the Trojans, who fell to 0-4.

Conemaugh Valley 50, Shade 39

Jess Verno scored 15 points while Beth Kendera and Nikki Ledwich added 10 points each in a Conemaugh Valley win over Shade.

Kendera added seven rebounds, Ledwich had six assists and Carly Gruss grabbed eight boards.

Casey Roberts led the Panthers with nine points.

Berlin 55, Portage 29

PORTAGE – Berlin broke open a close game, 19-15, in the third quarter with a 29-0 run to give the Mountaineers a road victory over Portage.

Brooke Snyder led all scorers with 20 points for Berlin. Tanea Lehman paced the Mustangs with eight points.

Windber 63, Meyersdale 29

WINDBER – Jen Rasko scored 14 points and teammates Sarah Berkey and Cheyenne Feathers supplied 11 apiece for Windber in a win over visiting Meyersdale.

Rasko also had 11 rebounds and four assists while Courtney Petrunak had five assists and four steals.

Katie Vena topped the Red Raiders with 15 points and Elizabeth Caton had 10.

Bishop Guilfoyle 51, Bishop Carroll 30

EBENSBURG – Alli Williams tallied 18 points and Halee Adams added 17 to lead the Marauders past the Huskies in a battle of unbeatens.

Kaleigh Floyd had 12 points for Guilfoyle (4-0).

Lindsy Sammarco topped the Huskies (3-1) with 12 points.

Bishop McCort 51, Bedford 18

BEDFORD – Visiting Bishop McCort tore out to a 32-6 halftime lead on the way to a victory over Bedford.

The Crushers’ Emily Basile topped all scorers with 12 points.

Crystal Dibert led the Bisons with seven points.

Blacklick Valley 50, Rockwood 40

NANTY GLO – Daneille Lesso scored 22 points and Carly Smith added 12 to lead Blacklick Valley past Rockwood.

Emily Miller topped the Rockets with 13 points and Sam Emert added 12.

Cambria Heights 67, Central Cambria 27

PATTON – Maria Pompa scored 28 points, including four

3-pointers, to pace Cambria Heights against Central Cambria.

Kristy Gwizdak had 14 points for the Highlanders, 5-1, and Kayla Cavallo added 11. Danielle Bodek grabbed 13 rebounds.

Breanne James and Jessica Kane had seven points each for Central Cambria.

Ferndale 76, Shanksville 39

Brittany Eisenhuth scored a career-high 43 points and added

14 rebounds, three blocks and five steals in a win over visiting Shanksville-Stonycreek.

Brittany Baumbaugh also had a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds, while Carly Priest had eight assists.

Kayla Maust led Shanksville with 11 points.

High School Boys

Forest Hills 72, Penn Cambria 68

CRESSON – Luke Gallaher had a double-double with 32 points and 10 assists to lead Forest Hills to a road victory over Laurel Highlands Section 1 foe Penn Cambria.

The Rangers’ Tanner Thomas led all scorers with 34 points and grabbed eight rebounds.

The Panthers got 29 points from Joe Dziabo and Josh Swope

had 14.

Johnstown 68, Richland 40

Richard Agurs and Quayshawn Thompson tossed in 11 points apiece to lead a balanced Johnstown attack against Richland.

Cliff Eddins and Dwight Andrews added 10 each for Johnstown, which improved to 6-2 overall and 3-0 in the Laurel Highlands Conference.

Dereck Malzi had 16 points for Richland, which fell to 0-3 in the league and 0-5 overall.

Meyersdale 71, Johnstown Christian 43

MEYERSDALE – Detrick Peterman poured in a game-high

33 points to lead Meyersdale to a victory over visiting Johnstown Christian.

Peterman added seven rebounds and five assists for the Red Raiders, who also got 19 points from Justin Donaldson along with 14 rebounds and 10 assists from Ben Lohr.

Kevin Shook topped the Blue Jays with 16 points while Jake Tuck had 11.

Conemaugh Valley 84, Laurel Valley 34

NEW FLORENCE – Four Conemaugh Valley players scored in double figures, topped by Jimmy Lupek with 28, as the Blue Jays pelted host Laurel Valley in nonconference action.

Cody Kushner added 17 points and 10 rebounds for Conemaugh Valley, which also got 12 points from Dalton Uncapher and

11 points and 15 assists from Jason Preuss.

Tyler DiPofi paced the Rams with 10 points.

Central Cambria 48, Cambria Heights 37

EBENSBURG – Brian Holsinger’s double-double featuring

17 points and 12 rebounds paced Central Cambria to a Section 1 Laurel Highlands victory over visiting Cambria Heights.

Ian Vescovi topped the Highlanders with 15 points.

Westmont 64, Somerset 45

Mike Rudnac scored a game-high 18 points, and Zach Drennen and Kyle Kunkle had 12 points apiece in Westmont’s win.

A.J. Rievel added 17 rebounds for the Hilltoppers.

Grace Prep 59, Cambria County Christian 33

STATE COLLEGE – Smith Paul scored a game-high 28 points to lead host Grace Prep to a win over Cambria County Christian.

Nick Hordon added 11 points for the hosts while Canaan Hess topped Cambria County with 12 points.
