Cranberry tournament
CRANBERRY – After giving up 12 points in the first quarter, Bishop McCort turned up the defensive pressure and shut down Greenville for a 40-25 victory in the championship.
The Crimson Crushers (4-2) fell behind 12-11 after one quarter but outscored Greenville 17-2 in the second to take control.
Emily Basile was named the tournament MVP after scoring 10 points for the Crimson Crushers (4-2) in the championship. Kristen Woznik was named the defensive player of the tournament and sophomore Jill Kegg was selected as the tournament’s up-and-coming underclassman.
Punxsutawney tournament
PUNXSUTAWNEY – Hazleton jumped out to an early lead and then held off Westmont en route to a 55-39 victory in the championship game.
Brianna Dudeck scored 19 points for the Cougars
(5-2) while Nicole Lisnock had 17.
Alyssa Yewcic had 12 points and seven rebounds for Westmont. Gina Rievel had 11 points and six steals.
Both were named to the all-tournament team.
Yewcic had 18 points in Westmont’s 43-40 victory over Punxsutwaney on Tueseday night. Rievel had 11.
Indiana tournament
INDIANA – All-tournament team member Beth Kendera scored 14 points and had four blocks as Conemaugh Valley beat Greater Latrobe 42-39 in the consolation game.
Jen Percinsky had 10 rebounds and eight points for the Blue Jays (5-2). Katelyn Emigh had four assists.
Courtney Zitt led Greater Latrobe (2-6) with 13 points.
Penns Manor tournament
CLYMER – Emily Protzman scored 27 points and Haley Hutterer added 11 to lead Knoch past Johns-
town 56-38 in the consolation game.
All-tournament team member Tynesha Smith had 18 points and 10 rebounds for Johnstown (0-7).
Jim Ellis Tournament
ALTOONA – Windber fell behind by 10 points in the first quarter, and could never recover in a 65-54 loss to Hollidaysburg in the consolation game of the Jim Ellis Tournament.
Jen Rasko led the Ramblers (4-2) with 22 points, six rebounds, five steals and four assists. Sarah Berkey had 11 points and Rachel Lovely added 10.
Alex Guildea scored 22 points for Hollidaysburg
(4-4) while Elle Collins had 13. Hannah Guildea and Hannah Mercer each had 11.

Berlin Holiday Shootout
BERLIN – Tournament MVP Brooke Snyder scored 17 points as host Berlin edged Somerset 42-36 in the title game.
Joining Snyder on the all-tournament team were Alana Weyant, Chestnut Ridge, Most Outstanding Player; Chelsea Shaulis, Somerset; Caitlyn Rohrs, Berlin; Nicole Shaffer, Somerset; Tiffany Clingerman, Chestnut Ridge; and Laura Etris, Berlin.
In the consolation game, Weyant netted 20 points, Clingerman had 13 points, and Stefanie McCoy had 11 as Chestnut Ridge defeated Frankfort (W.Va.)
54-37.

Berlin Holiday Shootout
BERLIN – Scott Gindlesperger had 16 points, Dakota Glessner 11 and MVP Alex Will, 11, as host Berlin won the tournament title with a 46-36 win over Northern, Md.
The all-tournament team included MVP Will; Brad Hengst, Chestnut Ridge, Most Outstanding Player; Scott Gindlesperger, Berlin; Josh Oakes, Rockwood; Coty Humberson, Northern; Jacob Weimer, Berlin; and Garrett Rayner, Northern.
In the consolation game, Coty Wertz had 17 points, Hengst had 13 and Nathan Pick, 11, as Chestnut Ridge edged Rockwood 61-59.
Rockwood’s Oakes had 14 points, Andrew Pletcher, 13, and Sam Sanner, 13.

Local man wins four golds
HAGERSTOWN, Md. – John Herbine of Westmont won four gold medals at the Hagerstown Community College Indoor Track Meet on Wednesday in the
70-74-year-old age group.
Herbine, who trains at the Johnstown YMCA, won the 50-meter, 300-meter and 500-meter events as well as the shot put.

The listed opponent for Northern Cambria in Friday night’s Laurel Mountain varsity hockey game at Cambria County War Memorial was Ferndale.
What the Reapers encountered was an emotional and purple-clad Jess’ Army.
The Yellow Jackets were able to cultivate the emotion and high spirits to a 7-1 win in the second Jess Ambroe Classic. -

Rams roll past Blue Jays
It had been a while since the Richland Rams had played a varsity hockey game. Though the Rams’ last action came on Jan. 12, Richland showed little rust as it trounced Conemaugh Valley 12-1 Friday evening at Cambria County War Memorial.
Richland (7-3-2) posted four goals in the game’s first 4:33 as it buried the Blue Jays (1-14) early. -

Mountain Cats look to get Pecora closer to No. 500
In some ways, it’s the perfect time for Pitt-Johnstown wrestling coach Pat Pecora to be reflective.
After all, his eighth-ranked Mountain Cats will be holding their final home match this evening when Anderson visits at 7 p.m. Pecora will be saying goodbye to six seniors, which is always an emotional time for him.
But he’s not ready to look back on his legendary career, even as he closes in on his 500th career win. -
Judge sets May trial date in Sandusky abuse case
A judge said Friday he would decide soon whether to grant former Penn State assistant coach Jerry Sandusky greater freedom – and visits from his young grandchildren – while he awaits trial on child sex-abuse charges, but prosecutors countered that Sandusky’s home is not a safe place for children.
Judge John Cleland set a tentative trial date of May 14 for Sandusky and promised to rule quickly on a number of other issues, including dueling requests for changes to his bail restrictions. -
Jordan Staal expected to return to Pens’ lineup today
Jordan Staal’s left knee is fine. His face, however, could use some work.
The Pittsburgh Penguins center plans to play today against Winnipeg in his first game since injuring the knee in a loss to the New York Rangers on Jan. 6.
The road back has gone smoothly enough until Staal started practicing with his teammates this week. -
UPDATED Bedford advances in PIAA wrestling in odd way
It’s not often that a team can win a match at the PIAA Class AA Dual-Meet Championships while giving up two forfeits, but that’s exactly what Bedford did this afternoon at the Giant Center.
In fact, the Bisons won 30-29 over Pen Argyl because they forfeited.
