Penn State suspends Adidas

STATE COLLEGE – Penn State has suspended its licensing contract with Adidas, saying the apparel company owes 2,600 workers severance pay after they lost their jobs when an Indonesian factory closed.

The university says the suspension will last 60 days. The university says it will terminate the contract if the company doesn’t pay the severance during that time.

A Penn State student group had said it would protest if the university didn’t take action on the matter by Wednesday.

Penn State President Rodney Erickson informed Adidas of the suspension in a letter Wednesday to Bob Leuenberger of Adidas Team Sport in Iowa. Leuenberger did not respond to an email message from The Centre Daily Times.

Erickson says Adidas’ actions “fall short of our expectation for fair, just and humane behavior.”

Que cleanup set by Jerome club

Jerome Sportsmen’s Association will hold its annual cleanup day at Quemahoning Reservoir, near Hollsopple, on April 6.

Individuals or groups interested in helping pick up trash should meet at the Que boat dock by 8 a.m.

Crews will pick up debris around the perimeter of the reserevoir and along the shoreline where accessible.

Refreshments will be served.

Fly-fishing event at Seven Springs

The third annual Fly Tyers Roundtable will be held from 6:30-9:30 p.m. March 28 at Seven Springs Mountain Resort in Somerset County.

The event will be held at the resort’s Sporting Clays Lodge and will feature nationally recognized fly tyers, including several magazine and book authors, who will demonstrate their methods in tying trout, bass and saltwater flies.

Among those scheduled to appear are Joe Humphreys, Bob Clouser, Bob Clouser Jr., Tom Baltz, Bob Popovics, Eric Stroup, Scott Loughner, Randy Buchanan and Chuck Furimsky.

State Fish and Boat Commissioner and Somerset Conservation District Manager Len Lichvar will be present to discuss current state fish management policies and local water quality issues.

Interest will also be gauged in restarting the Somerset County Fly Fishers organization.

The event is free and open to the public. Food and beverages will be available for purchase at the lodge.

UPJ closes trip on winning note

FORT PIERCE, Fla. – Zach Vignero went 5 for 5 and Pitt-Johnstown pitchers didn't allow a hit until the seventh in a 6-1 victory over Mercy on Thursday to close out the Mountain Cats’ trip to Florida.

Mercy was held hitless until the seventh inning and strung three hits together in the ninth to break the shutout.

Vignero had two RBI while Jeff Campbell added three hits. Jake Warner was 2 for 4 with a pair of RBI, and Ryan Matsko and Drew Ebersole chipped in two hits and two RBI apiece.

Brett Marabito also had a pair of hits.

Rylan Schnably pitched three hitless innings and fanned three in relief of John Fees to improve to 2-0. Fees threw the first three innings and didn't allow a hit. Fees also struck out four.

BASKETBALL

UPJ’s Novak named to squad

Pitt-Johnstown senior guard Nick Novak – the Mountain Cats’ all-time leader in assists and second-leading scorer – was named to the second team of the Daktronics’ All-Atlantic Region Division II squad on Thursday.

Novak, who was tabbed first-team all-WVIAC for the second straight year, led the Mountain Cats in scoring with 21.9 points a game, assists with 161, steals with 63, field goals (232 of 430), and free throws (135 of 161).

Novak holds the Mountain Cat record for assists (545), field goals made (759), and career free-throw percentage (86.1 percent) and is second on the all-time scoring list with 2,023 points.

Frank Karl coached the majority of the girls who comprise Shade High School’s softball team from the time they played T-ball and coach pitch.
Karl was there when the group, as elementary-school students, once rallied from an 18-run deficit to win a game, and he hoped to be there when the group reached the varsity level.
