ALTOONA —
Kyle Younkin expected to succeed at the District 6 Class AA Track and Field Championship Meet.
Forest Hills junior Luke Gallaher had no idea what to expect.
They both excelled at Mansion Park on Wednesday night.
Younkin, a senior at Somerset Area High School, captured two first places, setting a meet record in the 400 (48.49) along with a first in the 100 (11.24). Younkin also finished second in the 200 (22.48).
Younkin has been battling Tyrone sprinter Nick Patton all season, losing two events at the West Central Coaches Meet earlier this month. Wednesday night he turned the tables on Patton, winning two and advancing to the state meet May 28 and 29 at Shippensburg University.
“It meant a lot setting the record because Nick Patton from Tyrone beat me four times this year,” Younkin said about the 400. “So, I wanted to go out this time and win.”
Gallaher, who was jumping in just his third high school track meet, put forth a superb effort to capture the gold medal in both the long (221/4) and the high (6-7) jumps. He finished sixth in the triple jump (41-1).
“It means a lot to win two because I didn’t come in here seeded first in either one,” Gallaher said. “This is my third (high school) track meet. I went to practice with my sister (Casey), and I tried it. Then, I found out that I was half-decent, so I came out (for the team).”
Tyrone won the team title with 79 points followed by Bellwood-Antis (671/3), Bald Eagle Area (60), Richland (411/2) and Central Cambria (40).
Penn Cambria senior Zak Newton ran away from the field in the 300 hurdles, winning in 39.79.
“It’s what I came here to do,” Newton said about the win, his first district title after finishing third last year. “I wanted to get to that 39 mark, so it felt good to do that. It was just a great win.”
Ligonier Valley’s Jackson Corcoran captured the javelin with a distance of 187-02.
The Central Cambria 3200-meter relay team finished second (8:15.33) to Lewistown, and United’s squad finished third (8:18.11) to advance to states.
The Richland (44.43) and Westmont (44.69) boys
400-relay teams each qualified for states with second- and third-place finishes, respectively.
Other local athletes who qualified for states include Tyler Kleinmyer of Westmont (third in the 100, 11.58); John Green of Ligonier Valley (second in 300 hurdles, 41.12) and Blake Bussard of Central Cambria (41.53 in 300 hurdles); Mike Salguero of Central Cambria (second in the 1600, 4:30.59 and in the 3200, 10:03.21); Devin Shaner of Cambria Heights (second in the 110 hurdles, 15.95); Chris Speicher of Richland (second in the pole vault, 13-6); Chad King of Bishop McCort (third in the 1600, 4:27.3); Ryan Knupp of Ligonier Valley (third in the 400, 51.14); Kyle Kunkle of Westmont (third in the 800, 1:59.7); Richard Somiari of Richland (third in the long jump, 211/2); and Jerimiah Judy of Somerset (second in the triple jump, 43-10).
