Local basketball in brief

JOHNSTOWN — High School Boys Conemaugh Valley 63 Windber 46

WINDBER – The Blue Jays’ Dalton Uncapher scored

19 points to lead his squad to a victory over host Windber.

Conemaugh Valley, which led 22-6 after a quarter, also received 13 points from Hunter Furman.

Joe Pipon’s 10 points paved the way for the Ramblers’ attack.

Vincentian Academy 76 Bishop Carroll 60

EBENSBURG – Chris Koryak’s 26 points, including five from 3-point range, led Vincentian Academy.

Ryan Lauer’s 19 points fronted the Huskies, who got

16 points from Marcus Lee.

Westmont Hilltop 65 Ford City 49

Quentin Brandon scored

25 points and grabbed

15 rebounds in Westmont’s win over visiting Ford City.

Joe Glennon had 16 points and five assists for the Hilltoppers. Teammate Stephen Flick added 12 points.

Jon Shanty’s 17 points topped Ford City.

High School Girls

Berlin 64

Windber 56

BERLIN – The Mountaineers jumped out to a 27-13 first-quarter lead and held off visiting Windber in a WestPAC clash. Shelby Coughenour led a trio of Berlin Brothersvalley scorers in double digits with

20 points. Erica Craig followed with 16 points and Aleesa Fieg added 10 more.

Cheyenne Feathers scored

19 points in defeat while teammates Ongie Null and Nicole Vasas scored 13 and 10 points, respectively.

Bishop Guilfoyle 62 Bishop Carroll 36

EBENSBURG – The Marauders’ 34-8 halftime edge allowed them to coast to a Laurel Highlands win. Halee Adams’ 16 points set the pace for Bishop Guilfoyle, which received 14 points from Kayla Bates and 10 more from Devin Stessney.

The Huskies’ Dani Link netted 16 points in the loss.

College Men

Alderson-Broaddus 75 Pitt-Johnstown 53

PHILIPPI, W.Va. – Alderson-Broaddus broke open a three-point halftime advantage with a 21-2 run to open the second half en route to dealing Pitt-Johnstown a road loss.

Patrick Grubbs led Pitt-Johnstown with 17 points. The Mountain Cats have dropped three straight games and slipped to 12-11 overall and

10-8 in the WVIAC.

Grubbs was the lone Mountain Cat to score in double figures. Bill Luther had eight points, while Matt Palo and Ian Vescovi each had seven points and four rebounds.

Grubbs stands in third-place on the Mountain Cat all-time scoring list with 1,659 points and second on the all-time rebounding list with

932 rebounds, just 13 shy of Don Elzer for the Pitt-Johnstown record.

Mount Aloysius 87 Hilbert 76

CRESSON – Mount Aloysius placed five players in double figures in a win over Hilbert.

Jeff Stem led the way for the Mounties with 21 points. 

Davario Barksdale had

16 points, Kory Gibson and Demetrius Davis each had 11, and Jake Wyatt added

10 points. Gibson also had a game-high 8 rebounds.

Mount Aloysius forced Hilbert into 11 turnovers and held them to just 27 percent shooting from the field.

Mount Aloysius was 19 of

25 from the charity stripe.

Jordan VanDunk topped Hilbert with 20 points.

Robert Morris 70

St. Francis 56

MOON TOWNSHIP – St. Francis could not overcome an 11-point halftime deficit against Robert Morris. 

The Red Flash (5-19, 4-7) received a career night from Earl Brown and a solid showing from Scott Eatherton, but the Colonials (18-8, 9-4) picked up the win with strong backcourt play from Velton Jones and Coron Williams.

Brown tallied a career-high 17 points and Eatherton posted his sixth double-double of the season but it was not for SFU.

Jones and Williams combined for 31 as RMU picked up its ninth-consecutive win against the Flash.  

College Women

Robert Morris 77

St. Francis 65

MOON TOWNSHIP – Robert Morris erased a seven-point halftime deficit with a red-hot second half to down St. Francis at the Sewall Center on Saturday afternoon.

The Red Flash led 35-28 at intermission after shooting

52 percent from the field, but cooled to shoot 32 percent in the second. Meanwhile, the Colonials fired at a blistering

65 percent clip to rack up

49 points in the decisive the second stanza.

“We just didn’t play defense in the second half,” said St. Francis coach Susan Robinson Fruchtl. “You can’t give up

49 points and expect to win. I give credit to (Robert Morris coach) Sal (Buscaglia) for making some good adjustments, but we just have to play better.”

Alli Williams led the Red Flash with 26 points – including a 5-for-6 performance from the foul line – and eight rebounds.

The setback, coupled with a Monmouth loss, means St. Francis remains tied for third place in the Northeast Conference standings.

Pitt-Johnstown 64 Alderson-Broaddus 55

PHILIPPI, W.Va. – Sara Trimarco poured in a game-high 21 points and Kaitlynn Fratz added 18 points as Pitt-Johnstown raced out to a 14-point first-half advantage in a win at Alderson-Broaddus.

Pitt-Johnstown has won four in a row and seven of its last eight games to improve to

12-10 overall and 10-8 in the WVIAC.

Mount Aloysius 77 Hilbert 58

CRESSON – Senior Kaylee Keagy scored 12 points and pulled down 10 rebounds to lead Mount Aloysius to a win over Hilbert.

Keagy was 5 of 13 from the field, and a perfect 2 for 2 from 3-point range. She also had four blocked shots. Teammate Lindsy Sammarco led all Mount Aloysius scorers with

13 points.

Hilbert was led by Jenah Labuski with 18 points.

    The AAABA League opens on Tuesday at Point Stadium with two new, but familiar managers, a new but familiar sponsor, an expanded interleague schedule and two new franchises committed to the 2013 season.
    A lot of activity took place during the offseason, including the AAABA national committee’s vote to expand the age limit to 21 years old beginning in 2013.

    Paige Lumley was on an emotional roller coaster and seeing silver on Saturday at the PIAA Track and Field Championships at Shippensburg University.
    The Richland senior had state record jumps  twice during the triple jump competition, but ended up with a silver–medal leap of 40 feet,
    1¾ inches.
    Defending state champion, second-seeded  junior Lanae Newsome of Brookville, won with a jump of 40-3½.

    The Chestnut Ridge senior ran a career-best time of 38.12 to finish second in the 300 hurdles final, also setting another school record.

    Matt Hague was hit by a pitch from Rafael Dolis with the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth inning, and the Pittsburgh Pirates sent the Chicago Cubs to their 11th straight loss with a 3-2 victory Saturday night.
    Hague took a 96 mph fastball from Dolis (2-4) in the back near the shoulder blade, scoring Jose Tabata and eliciting an incredulous look to the sky by the Cubs reliever.
