BERLIN —
Berlin scored touchdowns on five of its six first-half possessions Friday night in rolling up a 47-14 win over visiting Ferndale.
Leading the high-powered offense for the Mountaineers was senior quarterback Ian Sayler, who rushed for a game-high 147 yards.
“The line is where it starts,” Sayler said. “Without a good line, no running back will do anything. I just ran wherever they gave me a hole.”
Sayler’s big running night included a 49-yard sprint for a touchdown after the center snapped the ball over his head. He also passed for 124 yards, completing 7 of 11 passes.
Berlin sophomore Drew Glotfelty pounded out 75 yards rushing, including a 59-yard run for a touchdown.
Leading the air attack were Jason Craig and Glotfelty, with two catches apiece for 31 and 29 yards, respectively.
The longest reception belonged to Berlin’s Tyrel Stockwell, who caught a
44-yard pass from Sayler which led to an Alex Will 4-yard touchdown catch.
“Last year we had to rely on Ian,” ninth-year Berlin coach Doug Paul said. “But this year, we have four or five legitimate threats.”
Ferndale scored on two big plays in the second half.
Senior running back Dave Horvath rushed for a team-high 144 yards, including three runs over 30 yards. Horvath scored both of Ferndale’s touchdowns.
The Yellow Jackets will play their home opener Sept. 11 against Shade.
Berlin will be on the road the same day at Conemaugh Valley.
“We wanted to come out and make a statement that we are a dominant team in the WestPAC,” Sayler said, “and we are going to try to win every game.”
