Trojans earn District 6 seeds
Greater Johnstown has four wrestlers seeded in the top four of their respective weight classes in the District 6 Class AAA tournament, which is scheduled to begin at 5:30 this evening.
Malcolm Harris, a sophomore with an 18-2 record, is seeded third at 119 pounds while Gervon Simon, a sophomore with 28-2 mark, is third at 171 pounds.
Senior Vinny Beppler (20-7) is seeded fourth at 160 pounds while junior Dejour Morris (19-10) is fourth at 285 pounds.
“If they wrestle like they’re capable of doing, good things will happen,” Greater Johnstown coach Gary Radnoti said. “I’m real happy with where we’re sitting. I’m just happy with how we’re matching up. Every match I’m looking at is winnable.”
The top three wrestlers in each weight advance to the Northwest Regional tournament.
FOOTBALL
Steelers retain Hampton, Reed
INDIANAPOLIS – The Pittsburgh Steelers have agreed to a deal with nose tackle Casey Hampton and placed the franchise tag on kicker Jeff Reed.
ESPN first reported the agreement with Hampton, and Kevin Colbert, the team’s director of football operations, confirmed it Thursday at the NFL Scouting Combine. ESPN reported the deal was for three years and $21 million, including
$11 million guaranteed. Colbert declined to offer specifics.
Hampton, a nine-year veteran, had 43 tackles and 21/2 sacks last season. Colbert said he hopes Hampton will spend the rest of his career with the Steelers.
Reed, an eight-year veteran, made 27 of 31 field goal attempts last season.
BASKETBALL
St. Francis men fall on road
EMMITSBURG, Md. – Shawn Atupem scored 15 points and Will Holland had a double-double to lead Mount St. Mary’s to a 67-51 victory over St. Francis on Thursday night.
Holland had 13 points and
10 rebounds for the Mountaineers (14-14, 11-6 NEC), who shot 64.7 percent from the field (11-for-17) to win their ninth consecutive game.
Devin Sweetney scored 15
and Sorena Orandi added 12 points for St. Francis (11-17, 9-8), which had its four-game winning streak snapped.
