Trojans wrestler wins at regional
Greater Johnstown sophomore Malcolm Harris took first place on Sunday in the 125-pound advanced division at the Mid-Atlantic Wrestling Association regional tournament held at Shippensburg University.
Harris, who also took first place in last week’s district tournament at Chestnut Ridge High School, advances to the May 1-2 Eastern Nationals at Salisbury, Md.
Johnstown senior Vincent Beppler, came in second Sunday in the 160-pound elite division and sophomore William Leeth placed fifth in te 130-pound elite division.
SOFTBALL
Westmont grad strikes out 10
Shauna Hetrick, a freshman pitcher at Saint Vincent College, helped the Bearcats to a dramatic 6-5 victory over Bethany College on Saturday afternoon.
The Westmont Hilltop graduate struck out a career-high 10 batters in the victory, scattering seven hits and one walk while allowing four runs, just two earned, in eight innings of work.
Hetrick's classmate, second baseman Sam Bly, hit a game-winning walk-off home run in the bottom of the eighth inning to seal the victory for Saint Vincent
(8-10).
Hetrick is 5-5 with three saves and a 3.69 ERA. She has 65 strikeouts and seven walks in 76 innings, and opponents are batting just .254 against her.
Somerset splits in tournament
CUMBERLAND. Md. - Somerset defeated Fort Hill, Md. - last year’s state champions - 2-1 in eight innings on Saturday.
Trailing 1-0 in the bottom of the seventh, the Golden Eagles’ Bits Barron led off, reaching base on an errant throw which put her at second.
Casey Pacifico advanced Barron to third on an infield put out. Hillary Olsavsky’s single to right tied the game.
After winning pitcher Jamie Emert, who finished with nine strikeouts, held Fort Hill in the top of the eighth, Somerset scored Nicole Landis from third on Brooke Spangler’s single to earn the win.
The Eagles lost the second game against Allegheny, 5-0. Barron, Marissa Conti, Jessie Stinebiser, Landis and Spangler all had hits for Somerset.
BASEBALL
Mountain Cats split twin bill
WEST LIBERTY, W. Va. - Justin Demek delivered a two-run double to break a 2-2 tie and highlight a three-run seventh inning to lead Pitt-Johnstown to a 5-2 victory in Sunday's first game of a WVIAC Northern Division doubleheader at West Liberty University.
The Hilltoppers scored five runs in the fourth in an 8-7 victory to salvage a split in the nightcap.
Pitt-Johnstown, which took three out of four in the series, is 22-12 overall, 10-6 in conference play.
The Mountain Cats travel to Clarion University for a doubleheader on Wednesday.
