HIGH SCHOOL SPORTS IN BRIEF

JOHNSTOWN — BASEBALL

High School

Penn Cambria 7 Johnstown 4

CRESSON – Penn Cambria pitcher Joel Myers got his first varsity start, giving up seven hits, while striking out five and walking five in a complete game victory over visiting Johnstown.

Mike Kearney was 2-for-3, scored a run and drove in two and Jordan Fuller was 2-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI for the Panthers. Shane Hartline scored a run and had an RBI, Adam Eckenrode scored two runs and Simon Eitle added an RBI for Penn Cambria.

For the Trojans, Curtis McClain was 2-for-3, scored two and drove in a run, Jerrell Thornton was 2-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI, and Nolan Eidem added two RBIs.

Bishop McCort 10 Forest Hills 6

ST. MICHAEL – Luke Gallaher went 3-for-4, Justin Gdula hit a home run and Colin Gdula was 2-for-2 to lead Forest Hills.

Central Cambria 6 Bedford 2

EBENSBURG – Jay Ostinowski hit a two-run single as Central Cambria beat Bedford.

Luke Trotz pitched a complete game, striking out four and walking two.

Bedford’s Ryland Schably had three hits.

Northern Cambria 12 United 9

ARMAGH – Winning pitcher Joel Polites, Anthony Atkins and Anthony Penska each had three hits as Northern Cambria defeated host United.

Jordan Long, Cody Trabert and Jon Hess had two hits apiece for the Lions.

Laurel Valley 10

Penns Manor 5

NEW FLORENCE – Brett Marabito and winning pitcher John Jones were both 2-for-3, with Marabito driving in two runs and Jones, one, as Laurel Valley doubled up visiting Penns Manor.

Jake Grace was 1-for-3 and scored three times for the Rams (5-2).

Somerset 14

Bishop Guilfoyle 4

ALTOONA - Max Marker was 2-for-3 – including a double and a triple – scoring three runs and driving in five, as visiting Somerset defeated Bishop Guilfoyle in five innings.

Josh Beistel, Drew Hemminger and Zach Helsely were also 2-for-3 for the Golden Eagles (7-2), who also got a

2-for-4 performance from Austin Sleek, including a double.

Jextin Pugh had a solo home run for the Marauders while Tyler Adams was 2-for-3 and Billy Beard was 2-for-2.

College

Mount Aloysius 2-7 Pitt-Greensburg 1-5

GREENSBURG – In the opener, Mike Godissart pitched a five-hitter with six strikeouts as Mount Aloysius beat host Pitt-Greensburg. Kyle Rose went 2-for-3 with two doubles and two runs.

The Mounties completed the sweep in Game 2, Sean Steffy tossed 61⁄3 innings with seven strikeouts. Mark Saxman had two hits and homered, Matt Cornetti had two hits and two runs, Mike Claycomb had two hits and scored a run, and Rose had a homer.

High School

Johnstown 6

Penn Cambria 5

Johnstown’s Kassie Sabo scored the winning run in the bottom of the eighth on a single and a series of misplays to help the Trojans edge visiting Penn Cambria.

Kiersten Szczur was 2-for-3 with a double, scored a run and drove in two for Johnstown.

Katie Reese had two hits and scored a run while Brianna Toth had two hits and scored two runs for the Panthers, who also got a double from both Brittany Vinglish and Taylor Freeman. Amanda Dodson was 2-for-4 for Penn Cambria.

Chestnut Ridge 15

Northern Bedford 9

NEW PARIS – Tiffany Clingerman, Stefanie McCoy and Brittany Mock were all

3-for-4 as Chestnut Ridge belted visting Northern Bedford.

Jessalyn Neatrour was

2-for-3, Alana Weyant went

2-for-2 and Kayla Gates was

2-for-4 for the Lions.

Richland 10

Bishop Carroll 8

Freshman Nicki Mihalik struck out 12 and walked four, scattering eight hits in a Richland win over visiting Bishop Carroll to help the Rams remain unbeaten (8-0).

Mihalick was also 3-for-4 while Lauren Keffer and Maura Koshute were both 2-for-3 with two runs scored and Keffer hitting a triple. Kaleigh Hudak and Sarah Szelong were both

2-for-4 for the Rams with Hudak scoring twice and Szelong, once.

For the Huskies, Lindsy Sammarco was 3-for-4 with a triple and scored three runs. Gabby Gueguen added a hit and scored twice and Kayla Legros was 2-for-4 for Bishop Carroll.

Northern Cambria 9 Saltsburg 0

NORTHERN CAMBRIA – Ashley Baker had a single and a three-run homer as Northern Cambria beat visiting Saltsburg.

Sami Kollar had two hits and drove in a pair of runs.

Baker also held Saltsburg without a hit through five innings, striking out eight and walking none. Kelley Sedlock tossed the final two innings in relief.

Berlin 6, Shade 1

BERLIN – Megan DeMartino yielded just three hits and fanned 14 in the complete-game victory as Berlin defeated Shade in a battle for first place in the WestPAC South standings.

Berlin scored first when Ashley Phillips doubled leading off the second inning and scored on an RBI groundout by Melissa Paul.

In the third inning, DeMartino doubled home two runs and scored on an RBI single by Phillips to put Berlin ahead

4-0.

Shade's Erin Spinelli led off the fourth with a liner off the glove of shortstop Lauren Short and scored on a two-out RBI single by Casey Roberts.

The Mountaineers added some insurance with two runs in the sixth off hits from Kristin Paul, Elizabeth Hay and Kristen Hankinson. Kelly Shaw went the distance for Shade in the loss, striking out four.

Somerset 6

Bishop Guilfoyle 0

SOMERSET – Jaime Emert won her third game in three days with her first shutout of the year in a two-hitter as Somerset downed visiting Bishop Guilfoyle.

Emert was 2-for-3, including a double, with two RBIs. Ashley Humbert and Nicole Shaffer were also 2-for-3 for the Golden Eagles with Humbert scoring one and driving in one while Shaffer scored one.

College

Mount Aloysius 6-9, Pitt-Greensburg 5-1

CRESSON – Whitney Giedroc went 4-for-4 with a home run, a triple, two doubles, four walks, four runs scored and three RBIs as Mount Aloysius swept a doubleheader over Pitt-Greensburg on Wednesday.

The Mounties won the first game 6-5 and the second 9-1 in six innings.
