    Burnett pitched into the ninth inning and Pedro Alvarez and Russell Martin homered to lead the Pittsburgh Pirates to a 6-2 win over the Chicago Cubs on Saturday.

    Ray Shero left little doubt at the trade deadline, with the Pittsburgh Penguins general manager telling anyone who would listen his team was “all in” for the Stanley Cup after giving stars Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin accomplished sidekicks in Jarome Iginla and Brenden Morrow.
    The roster built to bookend the championship the franchise won in 2009 instead went bust against Boston in the Eastern Conference finals.

  • Bishop McCort’s title defense derailed by Johnsonburg

    Bishop McCort coach Chris Pfeil credited Johnsonburg for its seemingly unlikely, if not miraculous comeback victory over the defending state champions on Friday afternoon.
    But the veteran coach also conceded that the Crushers will probably spend a lot of time pondering what might have been in the aftermath of a 7-6 loss in 11 innings during a PIAA Class A quarterfinal playoff at Punxsutawney’s Rich Kuntz Memorial Field.

    The Bishop McCort baseball team tasted the sweetness of winning last year in its pursuit of the PIAA Class A title.
    The Crimson Crushers experienced the bitterness of defeat Friday afternoon, ending their 11-game postseason win streak with a 7-6 loss to Johnsonburg in an 11-inning PIAA quarterfinal-round contest at Rich Kuntz Field.

    Adam McQuaid scored early in the third period, Tuukka Rask posted his second shutout of the series, and the Boston Bruins swept their way to the Stanley Cup finals with a 1-0 win over the Pittsburgh Penguins on Friday night.
    The Bruins won the Eastern Conference finals 4-0 and held the high-scoring Penguins to just two goals in the stunning sweep.

    Francisco Liriano wasn’t quite sure where his pitches were going. The one thing he did control was his emotions.
    Liriano pitched two-hit ball over seven innings and the Pirates beat the Chicago Cubs 2-0 Friday for their major league-leading 10th shutout, matching Pittsburgh’s total for all of last season.

  • Appeals rejected in PSU abuse case

    The state’s highest court turned down appeals Friday by two of the three former Penn State administrators facing criminal charges alleging that they covered up child abuse complaints against retired assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky.
    The state Supreme Court issued a pair of unsigned orders that denied petitions for review filed by former university Vice President Gary Schultz and former Athletic Director Tim Curley.
