MIKE MASTOVICH | Two tales of one city

JOHNSTOWN — The Johnstown/Bishop McCort series will be renewed Friday at Trojan Stadium.

Johnstown won 27-14 last year, ending a six-game Bishop McCort winning streak.

The city series has consisted of two lengthy stretches in which one team had the upper hand over the other.

Johnstown High beat Johnstown Catholic (now Bishop McCort), 26-0, in the series’ first game in 1933, beginning a run of eight consecutive Trojans’ shutout victories. Johnstown posted a 210-0 scoring margin from 1933 through 1954. The Trojans won the first 13 games of the series by a cumulative 404-31 count.

The series was halted multiple times because of the one-sided games.

But in 1989, play resumed after a cooperative effort by both districts, including much encouragement from former Johnstown coach Jerry Davitch and ex-Crushers coach Frank Krevetski. McCort stunned Johnstown 28-14 that season, starting a stretch in which the Crushers had a grip on the series while going 10-2-1 in the most recent 13 meetings.

The teams tied 14-14 in 1991, and Bishop McCort won 27-8 the following season.

When the programs first played each other as part of a LHAC schedule in 2001, McCort won eight of the first nine meetings, including the six-game streak. Johnstown won 14-9 in 2003 on a team led by  LaRod Stephens-Howling.

Overall the Trojans lead the series 15-10-1.
