John Edward Sroka

JOHNSTOWN — SROKA – John Edward, 87, Johnstown, died Dec. 22, 2012, at Memorial Hospital. Born Dec. 15, 1925, in Johnstown, son of Stephen and Anna (Long) Sroka. Preceded in death by parents, and sisters, Mary Visnick, Helen Stofko, Elizabeth Sabol and Margaret DeRubis. Survived by wife, Marion “Sally” (Englehart); daughters, Leslie Webb, State College; Karen Sroka, Windber; and Dr. Susan Shaffer, married to Dr. Darrell Shaffer, Minneapolis, Minn.; son, David Sroka, married to Elsa (Santini), Denver, Colo.; grandchildren, Joshua Sroka, and wife, Melissa, Aldie, Va.; Dr. Matthew Sroka, Johnstown; Rebecca Webb, State College; Elena Shaffer, Minneapolis; Rose Shaffer, Minneapolis; Lucy Sroka, Denver, Colo.; and Ethan Sroka, Denver, Colo.; and sisters, Dolores, and husband, Kent Garson, York, and Dorothy, and husband, Charles Frick, Johnstown. Also survived by numerous nieces, nephews and in-laws.  A 1944 graduate of Johnstown High School, he graduated midterm in order to enlist. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps, South Pacific Theater (1943 to 1946). Graduated from the University of Pittsburgh in 1950. He was a Pennsylvania licensed real estate broker, and creator and president of Johnstown Real Estate Exchange, Midstate Mortgage, Atlas Realty Management Co. and Executive Realty Group. He served as an officer and was a member of many organizations - Cambria County Board of Realtors; Pennsylvania Realtors Association; National Association of Real Estate Boards; Mayor’s Committee of Building and Housing Codes, City of Johnstown; Cambria County Board of Assessment Appeals; Knights of Columbus; American Legion; former Trustee Mount Aloysius College in Cresson; Chairperson of the Board of Regents, St. Vincent Seminary, Latrobe; Chairman Family Life Center Fund Raising Committee; member Cambria County Industrial Development Authority; Trustee Society of Industrial Realtors Education Fund; and past President Western Pennsylvania Chapter of the Society of Industrial Realtors. In 1981, he re-activated the St. Vincent de Paul Society of the Altoona-Johnstown Diocese and formed Food for Families, Family Kitchen, Operation TOUCH, Mary’s Place, Senior Peer Counseling, Home Visitors and Stephen’s Ministries. In 1985, he became a Permanent Deacon of the Altoona-Johnstown Diocese and served at Our Mother of Sorrows and Church of the Visitation parishes. In 1988, he became a member of the Knights of Malta. He loved to spend time in his garden and wood-working shop and traveling with his wife, children and grandchildren. Member of  Visitation Church of the BVM, where he actively served as a Permanent Deacon. Friends received from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday,  Dec. 26, 2012, and 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Frank Duca Funeral Home, Westmont Chapel, 1622 Menoher Blvd., where vigil will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday. Funeral Mass will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Visitation Church of the BVM, the Archabbot Douglas R. Nowicki, OSB, the Rev. Father Barry Baroni and the Rev. Father Joseph Maurizio, con-celebrants.
