Thomas John Fulton Gilmore Sr.

JOHNSTOWN — GILMORE – Thomas John Fulton Sr., died peacefully in his sleep Dec. 27, 2012, at McCullough House, Johnstown. Born April 8, 1927, son of the Irish immigrant Joseph Edward Gilmore Sr. and Della Myrtle (Marsh) Gilmore. Preceded in death by parents; brothers, Samuel Gilbert, Joseph Edward Jr., Harold Lawrence and Curtis E., who also was his best friend; and sister, Margaret Jane Donohue. John was joined in heaven later the same day by former daughter-in-law, Jeanne (Baumann) Gilmore, Asheville, N.C. Survived by beloved and devoted wife of 62 years, the former Ruth Eileen Coleman; and children, Thomas John Jr., married to Marsha Forrester, Greer, S.C.; Dr. Gary Lee, married to the former Janice E. Parks, Pittsburgh; and Susan Jane Layton, and special companion, Paul G. Sheesley. Grandpa John was deeply loved and will be sadly missed by his grandchildren, Lelania Ruth (Gilmore) Porter, Clarksville, Tenn.; Chandra Lynn (Gilmore), wife of Adam Olenik, Baltimore, Md.; Matthew Thomas Staib, Erie; and Daniel James Gilmore, Cambridge, Mass. Also survived by numerous nieces and nephews; former son-in-law, Philip E. Staib; best friend and employee, Terry Jury, and wife, Jane; and special friends, the girls at Somerset Trust, Richland office, and his lunch group at McDonald’s Restaurant, Scalp Avenue, whom he visited on a daily basis until shortly before his death. Owner and operator of Thomas J. Gilmore Produce-Gilmore Pallets. John was an Army veteran, having been station in South Carolina and Louisiana. John was a hard worker all his life. His work ethic continued into the early ’80s and he was an inspiration to those who worked with him and knew him. Friends will be received from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday and from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at John Henderson Co. Funeral Home, 215 Central Ave., where funeral service will be held at 9:30 a.m. Monday, the Rev. John Brownlee. In lieu of flowers, family suggests donations be made to Westmont Baptist Church, 115 Jeffrey Drive, Johnstown, Pa. 15905, or Alzheimer’s Association, 1100 Liberty Ave., Suite E. 201, Pittsburgh, Pa. 15222.
