EBENSBURG — BENDER – Martin W. Sr., 69, Ebensburg, passed away Nov. 20, 2012, at Altoona Regional Health System – Altoona Hospital. Born May 23, 1943, in Patton, son of the late Harry and Catherine (Link) Bender. Survived by wife, the former Agnes Weakland, to whom he was married 48 years; and children, Martin Jr., married to the former Jacqueline Sloan, Johnstown; and Christine Bender, Ebensburg. Also survived by grandson, William “Billy” Bender, Johnstown; mother-in-law, Inez Weakland, formerly of Carrolltown; brothers, Richard (Nancy) Bender and Regis (Carol) Bender, both of Johnstown; and numerous nieces, nephews, aunts and uncles. Martin retired from Bethlehem Steel Corp., Franklin Plant, and was a member of United Steelworkers union. Also a member of Holy Name Roman Catholic Church and Ebensburg Council 522 Knights of Columbus. Martin enjoyed woodworking and camping at Raystown and Glendale Lakes. Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at Askew-Houser Funeral Homes Inc., Ebensburg, where Knights of Columbus memorial service will be held at 7 p.m. and a vigil prayer service also will be held. Funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Holy Name Church, the Rev. Monsignor Arnold L. Gaus, celebrant. Entombment, Holy Name Mausoleum. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the charity of your choice or to Martin’s family.
