HASTINGS — BEARER – Mary Ethel, 84, Bridge Street, Hastings, died July 2, 2012. Born Sept. 23, 1927, in Coalport, daughter of the late Wilfred and Mary (Cossick) Lantzy. Preceded in death by brothers, John and Richard “Jerry.” Survived by husband, William, whom she married July 24, 1954, in Hastings. Death ends marriage union of 57 years. Also survived by children, Joan Ronan (Walt), Johnstown; and Cheryl Martin (Louis), Palmyra; grandchildren, Jessalyn, Kyle, and Kerralyn Ronan; and Leah and Tess Martin; great-granddaughter, Elizabeth Rose Martin; brother, William (Pat), Seattle, Wash.; and special cousin, Patty Lantzy Walton (Tom), Seattle, Wash. Also survived by numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Member of the 1945 graduating class of Hastings Elder High School. She went on to earn a bachelor’s degree in teaching with a specialization in home economics at the State Teachers College at Indiana, now known as Indiana University of Pennsylvania. She instructed thousands of the area’s women in the art and science of nutrition, cooking, sewing and home management. She was an advocate for students’ rights and gender equality. She was a teacher from 1950 until her retirement from Cambria Heights Middle School in 1976. Member of Court of Our Lady of Victory 722 Catholic Daughters of America, where she served as regent. She also served on the Library Board of Hastings, sponsored the heritage room at the library and donated several personal items for display from her father’s career as a coal miner and foreman in the Hastings area. Mary Ethel was a joy to her family and friends and maintained her sense of humor throughout her life. Member of St. Bernard’s Catholic Church, Hastings, where friends will be received from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Saturday, followed by funeral Mass at 11 a.m., the Rev. Thaddeus Rettger, OSB, celebrant.
