ARLINGTON, VA. — THOLT – Mary Agnes, 88, a longtime resident of Arlington, Va., passed away Oct. 6, 2012, in her new home in Missoula, Mont., of natural causes. She had moved to Montana in December to live out her life closer to her niece and nephews. She was living with her nephew and godson, Mike, at the time of her death. Survived by niece, Barbara Fogarty, Los Vegas, Nev., and Barb’s children, Julie and Joe; nephews, Frank, Bandon on the Bay, Ore.; and Mike, and wife, Judi, and their daughter, Michelle (Pete), and children, Sylvia and Owen; nephew, Robert, and wife, Cindy, Helena, Mont., and their sons, Adam (Nicole), and their children, Carson, Virgil and Jasper; Nick (Jill), and their children, Bethany and Jackson; and Tim (Lauren); nephew, Joe (Kim), South Bend, Neb.; and grandniece, Melissa Walker, Phoenix, Ariz., and her children, Miles and Mhya. Survivors also include many loving cousins and their families. Though never married, she became the matriarch of the Tholt family. She often quipped “6 times a bridesmaid and never a bride, but it is good because I don’t have a domestic bone in my body.” Born Aug. 9, 1924, in Johnstown, and was the second child of Slovakian immigrants, Julia Kucera and Heliodor Tholt, both born in the small village Ludrova. They married in 1919 in Johnstown. Mary Agnes’ beloved brother, Joseph John, was born in 1923. Joseph began school at German Catholic St. Joseph School and spoke only Slovak. As he learned English, he taught Mary Agnes. However, Slovak was the language spoken at home. Mary Agnes thought she had forgotten her Slovak but on a trip to Slovakia in later years found herself being more the interpreter than the tour guide. Her childhood and adolescence was spent on Steele Street in Johnstown until 1948, when she spent a short time in Montana helping her brother with his growing family. The East coast called her back and she lived in and loved New York City. She worked during the day and went to college at night and at 33 years old, she earned a degree in economics with a minor in mathematics from Hunter’s College, a part of NYC College. She had enjoyed working for the IRS until a transfer to Massachusetts. So she took her civil service exam and obtained employment with Social Security, which lasted until her retirement in 1988. At that time, she had risen through the ranks and at retirement was a senior claims examiner. While employed, she took assignments all over the United States and after retiring, she traveled extensively, crossing the ocean 11 times. The Catholic church was the center of her life and she was a faithful member of St. Thomas Moore Cathedral for more than 40 years. She was a Lay Oblate of The Franciscan Order and a great philanthropist to many needy missions, orphans and the great work of Mother Theresa and the Sisters of Charity. Masses were said for her in many cathedrals and humble missions in remembrance of her giving heart. A fugal woman who lived in the same two-room apartment for more than 40 years made all her own clothes and knitted all her own sweaters left a legacy for many. Preceded in death by parents; her beloved brother, Joseph (1970); nephew, Tim (1981); niece, Mary Pat (1984); and many aunts, uncles and cousins. Funeral Mass will be held at 1:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 9, at St. Thomas Moore Cathedral, with a reception following. Interment will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 10, at SS. Peter & Paul Cemetery, Johnstown. Graveside service has been arranged by Francis G. Ozog Funeral Home Inc., Johnstown. A very special thanks to Jack and Diane Jenc for their gifts of love and for making the arrangements for Aunt Mary Agnes’ service in Arlington, Va.
