Joseph Kanuch Jr.

LOWER YODER TOWNSHIP — KANUCH – Joseph Jr. “Tony,” 77, Lower Yoder Township, died unexpectedly at his home July 7, 2012.  Born Feb. 2, 1935, in Johnstown, son of Joseph Sr. and Mary (Filo) Kanuch. Preceded in death by parents; brother, Donald Kanuch; and sister-in-law, Patty (Dropko) Kanuch. Joseph was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother and uncle and family was very important in his life. He is survived by wife of 54 years, Mary L. (Biandino) Kanuch, Lower Yoder Township, and children, David Kanuch, Lynchburg, Va.; Daniel, married to the former Kitty Bradley, Johnstown; Richard, married to the former Pam Purazo, Ligonier; Karen (Kanuch), married to Erik Arlet, Mount Lebanon; Joseph “Joe,” married to the former Jody Arcuri, Johnstown; and Kristy (Kanuch), married to Chip Wolff, New Alexandria. Also survived by grandchildren, Jim, Brad, Josh, Amie, Alyssa, Maria, Joseph and Carson Kanuch; Kara, Kayla and Patrick Shields; Parker Arlet; and Emily, Natalie, Jamey and Mia Wolff, and great-grandchildren, Cooper and Crosby Kanuch. Brother of Delores, married to Joseph Cardarella,  Seward; Mary “Cookie,” married to Michael Kutchma; and Edward Kanuch, married to the former Joanne Kline, both of Johnstown. Also survived by numerous nieces and nephews. A U.S. Army veteran. Retired millwright for the Gautier Division of Bethlehem Steel Corp., Johnstown. Joseph was an active member of the St. Clair Tremont Trap and Field Club. A member of the NRA, he was an avid outdoorsman and gardener. He enjoyed sharing his experience as a certified instructor for the Pennsylvania Game Commission. He had a passion for the Pittsburgh Steelers and Pirates. A former umpire for St. Therese Little League. Founder of the Lower Yoder Lions Little League baseball team and one of the original founders of the “D Street Baseball Field Complex.” Joseph was a very dedicated and active parishioner of his beloved St. Mary’s Byzantine Catholic Church. Always faithful and eager to work, help and serve the needs of his church and assist in ways to support the many roles St. Mary’s Church provides to its congregation and to the community. Funeral Liturgy will be held 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Mary’s Byzantine Catholic Church, the Rev. Monsignor Raymond Balta. Committal, Grandview Cemetery.  Friends received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at Francis G. Ozog Funeral Home Inc., Broad Street, where Parastas will be held 7 p.m. Monday. In lieu of flowers, donations are to be made to St. Mary’s Byzantine Catholic Church in memory of Joseph Kanuch Sr. Condolences may be sent at ozogfh.com.
