Russell J. Weaver (Cian S. Yates)

JOHNSTOWN — WEAVER – Russell J. (aka Cian S. Yates), 53, Glessner Road, Johnstown (Schocalog Stables), died June 5, 2012, in Ligonier, as a result of a fall from a roof at work. Born Nov. 1, 1958, in Akron, Ohio. Preceded in death by father, James E. Weaver. Survived by mother, Marilyn (Yates) Weaver, married to Ed Frank; twin brother, Scott, Williston, N.D.; brothers, Josh, Somerset; John, and wife, Diane, Millbrook, N.Y.; and Grant, and wife, Tara, McKinleyville, Calif.; half sister, Cora Weaver, Ligonier; nieces, Tasha, Lauren, Erin, Cassandra, Abigail and Ruth; and nephews, Craig, Jacob and Isaac. A 1977 graduate of Conemaugh Township Area High School. He was an Eagle Scout and a U.S. Army veteran, having served with the Green Beret-Special Forces in Korea. He was a weapons specialist, expert with a variety of small arms and proficient in small unit tactics. He volunteered for the Red Cross, where he was named volunteer of the month. While earning soldier-of-the-year honors at Fort Devens, Mass., he earned an associate of science degree with high honors at Mount Wachusett Community College. He also was a Phi Beta Kappa magna cum laude graduate of Amherst College in Massachusetts with a bachelor of arts degree in English. His writing background included interning with the Atlantic Monthly magazine, co-editor of Amherst Review, writing counselor to peers at Amherst College and author of a collection of short stories. The title story, about two green berets in Europe on exercises, won a Corbin Literary Prize. He then attended the University of Minnesota, where he earned his master’s degree in English. He lived in Ireland for 11 years, where he worked for Dell Computers as a project manager for IT logistics. He also worked for Blizzard Computer Games as a project manager. He was a cancer survivor for three years and had returned to the family farm in Conemaugh Township, and was employed by Jay Springer Contracting, Ligonier. He had a lifelong love and admiration of Native Americans, animals and all of nature. He also was an avid reader and lover of books. Memorial service will be held in July and will be announced at a later date. Arrangements by Hoffman Funeral Home & Cremation Services, Davidsville.
