INDEPENDENCE TOWNSHIP, MICH. — MATELJAN – Anna Marie, Capt. Army Nurse Corps, Independence Township, Mich., died Dec. 27, 2012. She was born in Johnstown. She was the seventh of 11 children. Her parents were Croatian immigrants. She attended St. Rochus Catholic Grade School, Garfield Junior High School and Johnstown High School, where she graduated in 1938. She graduated from Mercy School of Nursing in 1942. She joined the U.S. Army as a second lieutenant in 1943 and was a member of the 107th Evacuation Hospital (MASH) Unit that trained in Fort Devens, Mass. She served as an operating room nurse on Omaha Beach, at the Battle of the Bulge, where her unit treated the first of 25,000 casualties to pass through that hospital. She remained on active duty and worked as a general duty nurse at the Veterans Hospital from 1946 to 1949, at which time she re-enlisted to serve as a captain in Japan and Korea. In 1952, she retired from active duty and served as a reservist until 1956 when she received an honorable discharge from the Army. She was well-decorated for her service. After her service, Anna Marie worked as an industrial nurse at Chrysler Corp. for 30 years and with underprivileged children until she retired. In May of 2012, she was honored with the distinguished Spirit of Nursing Award by the Nightingale Society of Oakland University School of Nursing. She resided with her sister, Margaret, in Michigan. She is survived by her sister, Margaret; her brother, Raymond; and many nieces and nephews. A memorial Mass will be held Saturday, Jan. 5, 2012, at 10 a.m. at St. Thomas More Catholic Church, 4580 N. Adams Road, Troy, Mich. Military honors will follow at church. Her ashes will ultimately be laid to rest at Great Lakes National Veterans Cemetery, Holly.
