JOHNSTOWN — ESCHRICH – Oscar F., 91, Johnstown, died Jan. 27, 2013, at his home. Born April 25, 1921, in Johnstown, son of the late Edmund and Martha (Groebel) Eschrich. He was the youngest and last surviving member of his immediate family, having been preceded in death by sisters, Louise, Margaret, Clara and Meta Nozsak, and daughter-in-law, Deborah Eschrich. Survived by wife, Eva Jean (Strayer) Eschrich whom he married Aug. 28, 1949; sons, William Eschrich, Salix; and Dennis Eschrich, and wife, Catherine, Summerhill; and grandchildren, Erin and Eric. Member of Mount Calvary Lutheran Church. He graduated from Johnstown High School. He worked in steelmaking before volunteering for military service, having served in the Air Force as a B-17 flight officer and bombardier near the end of World War II. Also a member of the U.S. Air Force Association. Oscar worked as a patternmaker for U.S. Steel and Johnstown Corp. He enjoyed traveling the United States. Oscar was an avid gardener, he loved vacationing with family and friends in Ocean City, N.J., and was a reader and history buff. He built his Richland home in the 1950s and enjoyed spending his time there with family and friends, especially on his beloved back porch. A special thank you to Windber Hospice, its staff and nurses, and a special thank you to in-home caregivers Alice, Carol and Elaine. Friends received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Henderson Funeral Home, East Hills, 2503 Bedford St. Funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Mount Calvary Lutheran Church, Pastor Custead, officiating. Interment, Richland Cemetery. Military rites accorded at graveside by members of Charles Menoher Post 155 VFW. The family suggests memorial contributions be made to Windber Hospice.
