SPENCER, N.Y. — HERKO – Joseph, 90, Spencer, N.Y., a former resident of Johnstown, passed away Dec. 30, 2012, after an illness. Born Oct. 12, 1922, in Johnstown, son of Alexander and Eva (Zahoran Hobor) Herko. Preceded in death by parents; sisters, Mary, Helen and Anna; and brothers, Michael, Samuel, John, Alexander, Stephen, Thomas and Peter. Survived by sister, Agnes. On June 27, 1969, he married Arlene Laterman Strope, and widowed in 1995. His stepchildren are Donna Wild (John), William (deceased), Diane Alve (Chuck Brooks), Janis Strope, Michael and Donna Manning (Craig). He had 12 stepgrandchildren and 13 stepgreat-grandchildren. He will be sadly missed by numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Joe served in the U.S. Navy during World War II aboard the USS Henrico. He worked for Banfield Co. and then P&R Oil Co., having retired in 1994. Memorial and military services were held at noon Jan. 5 at Allen-Manzer Funeral Home, Spencer, N.Y., by the Rev. Phil Jordan and Navy personnel. Interment will be held in the spring at the convenience of the family at Lockwood Cemetery, Lockwood, N.Y.
