JOHNSTOWN — REED – Roger Paul, born Nov. 21, 1961, in Johnstown, died Feb. 11, 2013, in Ebensburg. Preceded in death by his father, Paul Reed. Survived by mother, Ethel Reed, Johnstown; sisters, Haze Varner Tesler and Vivian Horner Lamachia, both of Bushkill, Pa.; and brothers, Montana Horner, Elton; and Brenton Horner, Santa Barbara, Calif. Roger was a graduate of Johnstown High School and Gemological Institute of America, Santa Monica, Calif., where he earned the title of Certified Gemologist. Roger had been a longtime member of the Pennsylvania National Guard. His abiding passion came with his discovery of the Sierra Mountains, where he camped and hiked as often as circumstances allowed. He was a funny, witty, clever and sweet man who too soon met with a debilitating injury that eventually claimed him. A light that shines twice as bright burns half as long ... “Remember me when I am gone away, Gone far away into the silent land; When you can no more hold me by the hand, Nor I half turn to go yet turning stay. Remember me when no more day by day You tell me of our future that you plann’d: Only remember me; you understand. It will be late to counsel then or pray. Yet if you should forget me for a while And afterwards remember, do not grieve; For if the darkness and corruption leave A vestige of the thoughts that once I had, Better by far you should forget and smile Than that you should remember and be sad.” A private service will be held Saturday, Feb. 16, followed by interment at Richland Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Roger to Church of Brethren Home in Windber would be appreciated.
