SALEM, VA. — BARGER – Marjorie Belle (Pollock), 83, Salem, Va., passed away unexpectedly but peacefully Saturday, June 16, 2012. She was born in Flushing, N.Y. Jan. 4, 1929, and earned an art degree from Colby Sawyer College, New Hampshire, in 1948. Marjorie joined her family in Baltimore, Md., to work in advertising and met her future husband, Bruce C. Barger. They married in 1951 and settled in Johnstown, where they raised four children. During her 32 years in Johnstown, Marj continued her art by studying with several well-known artists and joining the Allied Artists of Johnstown. Her work from that period can be found in many corporate offices and private homes. In 1981, Bruce retired from Bethlehem Steel, and they moved with their youngest child, David, to Largo, Fla. Again Marj continued to improve by studying with local artists and was invited to join Studio 1212 Inc. in 1993. Her extensive travels around the world with her mother provided rich subject matter as she began exhibiting and winning awards for her work. Although her pieces range from oil to acrylics to miniatures, she grew to prefer working in pastels and pencils. In 2001, Marj received a diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease, and they moved to Salem, Va., two years later to be near their daughter, Carol. As the fog of dementia slowly blanketed Marj’s memories, she remained a cheerful, pleasant and loving person. Marj is sadly missed by all who knew her. She was preceded in death by her parents, Walter and Marjorie Pollock; brother, Kenneth Pollock, in 2001; and husband, Bruce, in 2009. Survived by children, Betsey Barger, Roanoke, Va.; Carol Buriak, and husband, Jim, Salem, Va.; Bruce Barger, and wife, Kelly, Johnstown; and David Barger, and wife, Kinbly, St. Augustine, Fla.; grandchildren, Bruce, Jonathan and David Barger and Jim and Laura Buriak. The family wishes to thank the staff of Salem Terrace at Harrogate for their capable and compassionate care during the past year. Private funeral arrangements have been made through Simpson Funeral Home, 5160 Peters Creek Rd., Roanoke, Va., (540) 366-0707. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the Marjorie Pollock Barger Memorial Fund found at alz.org to benefit the Alz- heimer’s Association.
