Rev. Alphonse T. Mascherino

SOMERSET — MASCHERINO – Rev. Alphonse T., 69, Somerset, passed Feb. 15, 2013, at the In Touch Hospice House after a lengthy struggle with cancer. Born June 4, 1943, in West Chester, he was the son of the late Dominick and Emily (Fiore) Mascherino. He was ordained a Catholic priest in 1976 in the Archdiocese of Altoona/Johnstown, Alphonse served in several dioceses in Pennsylvania, Louisiana, Florida, California and Delaware. His ministries included hospital chaplain, evangelical communications/broadcasting and pastoral ministries. Alphonse founded the Flight 93 Memorial Chapel in Shanksville two months following the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks and served as director of the chapel for 12 years before retiring this month due to health concerns. The chapel was established to honor the passengers and crew of Flight 93 and all innocent people who died in the terrorist attacks. Surviving family members include sisters, Mary Jean Manion, and husband, Thomas, Alamogorda, N.M., and Genevieve Burghardt, Long Island, NY., and brothers, James Mascherino, and wife, Marie; Fred Mascherino, and wife, Gail, West Chester; Joseph Mascherino, and wife, Joan; Andrew Mascherino, and wife, Kathy, Downingtown; Louis Mascherino, and wife, Sharon; and Dominick Mascherino, Coatesville. He also leaves behind aunts, Laura Reutter and Antoinette Morris, Downingtown, and Frances Alesiani, West Chester, and many cousins, nieces, nephews and friends, including dear friends, Don and Kay Kemp, Salisbury. He is preceded in death by his sisters, Frances Cosgrove and Philomena (Mena) Hoopes and their spouses. Friends will be received from 5 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Miller Funeral Home and Crematory, Somerset. Funeral Mass at 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Peter’s Roman Catholic Church, Somerset, Father Daniel O’Neill, celebrant. Alphonse will then return home to Downingtown with family and friends being received from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday and 9 to 10:30 a.m. Friday at James J. Terry Funeral Home, 736 E. Lancaster Ave., Downingtown, with a funeral Mass to follow at 11 a.m. Friday at St. Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church, 338 Manor Ave., Downingtown. Interment will follow at St. Joseph’s Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Flight 93 Memorial Chapel, Shanksville, Pa. 15560 or In Touch Hospice, P.O. Box 1170 Somerset, Pa. 15501, where Alphonse resided at his time of passing.
